Damn, not a single person giving any reason why this movie is supposed to be good.

Probably because people saw this:

quote:

Good performances? Nope.

Cinematography? LOL

The score? Snooze.

I guess the scenery was nice. Not sure how pretty trees make it a good movie though.

And realized there's no hope for a discussion.

The Cinematography and Score are clearly far above average and the fact that you miss that is a huge problem to any further discussion.

See here:

And I honestly can't believe we have to debate the score....

It isn't the greatest film ever made, no, maybe, MAYBE, not even Top 100. There are a lot of films out there. But it is far above average, and is one of the better historical fictions out there, and is probably one of the best films about the 18th Century America.

Ah yes, the cinematography. How could I forget that groundbreaking 30-second shot of a fricking bridge.

The first two shots are just nice scenery, the third is basic. This is slightly above a made for TV movie.

The score was cheesy and boring.

Whut?

For the first shot, what's going on here? They are in the middle of running away from battle, so they have the characters run towards the film, angled up and across so it gives unique perspective. Not only that they show, in full, how the Indians are organized to watch them. And, it has a good mix of actors and color, with the color of the mountain, the water, the green and the actors juxtaposed against that. It's a good shot.

The second shot is iconic, as the director isolates the two most important people in the film . -The Last of the Mohicans and the Indiana that aligns himself with British forces, - against the backdrop of mountains and Blue Sky.

The third is far from basic. It may seem basic because opposing forces standing against each other is a common shot for sure, but the colors, the flags, the smoke....it makes it look like an 18th Century painting, which was the point. It was very successful on that point.

See here, Battle of Yorktown painting:

The score is generally considered one of the best in film history.

You’re just trolling now.

It had some good shots, don't get me wrong, it's just nothing special. Like another poster said, it's just not memorable. If I'm at a bar talking about movies with great cinematography and brought up Last of the Mohicans, I would probably be asked to leave.

This movie came out in 1992 and you are just watching it in 2017. Your taste in movies is influenced by the progress in filming over 25 years which has been significant. I wouldn't argue against someone saying it hasn't held up in the test of time. It's a movie that was done well with a fantastic score especially 25 years ago.

No one said it had the greatest cinematography of all time, and no, when talking about cinematography, LotM is not in the first 50 films I would personally mention. But you said:

quote:

Cinematography? LOL

Which is different. Additionally, just because the cinematography isn't the greatest cinematography of all time, doesn't make the cinematography "LOL" worthy. It's still very good, far above average camera work.

When it comes to "greatest of all time" in any aspect/feature/category of film, there are usually a handful of worthy subjects with some outlier interesting cases. I would easily say 99.99999% of films don't fall into 2-3 of those categories simultaneously, but again, this does not necessarily reduce the "greatness" of a particular film.

It seems like you think people slot LoTM into the Casablanca/Godfather/Pick Your Hitchcock/The Good the Bad the Ugly Tier of films, and I don't think that many people do.

Additionally, you should say "I don't think Last of the Mohicans is as good as people think it is...." then presented some facts, rather than "Why do so many people say this is a good movie?" and "Cinematography? LOL." Your implication is that LotM is a bad movie, which is either 1) Troll or 2) Completely Unwarranted and generally incorrect "opinion"

The Gael still hypes me enough to run through a wall. I listened to this song right before leaving the locker room for my high school football games.

This - I imagine - is the song that played from the helicopter speakers as Seal Team 6 raided and killed Bin Laden.

It's how God watched Kick 6; he slowed down time, put on this song, and watched Chris Davis run 100 yards in 4 minutes and 14 seconds.

It's what Tom Brady played to convince the New England Patriots that they could come back from 28-3 in a Super Bowl.

The Gael makes your entire OP invalid. It crushes you, drives you before it, and hears the lamentations of your women.

i give some credence to being overrated, but i would stop at saying it's not good. for the early 90's it was very good. my wife watched it with me recently and she really hated it outside of the last 15 minutes. i disagreed, but picked on some pretty bad things that i would have missed for nostalgia's sake.

i think the problem is wooden acting by a lot of roles in there and it's towards the bottom of DDLs barrel.

to say cinematography or score wasn't good is madness though. beautifully filmed and scored. i'd honestly put the last 15 minutes against almost any other 15 minutes in film in that regard.

Include the whole quote if you're going to call it out, dipshit.

No! You stay alive! If they don't kill you, they'll take you north up to the Huron lands. Submit, do you hear? You're strong! You survive! You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you! No matter how long it takes, no matter how far. I will find you!

Then the fricker dives into a waterfall.
