The best war movie scene of all time is easily the Normandy landing scene in SPR.

The most gutwrenching war movie scene of all time is probably the church burning scene in Come and See.

The final battle scene in the Last Samurai. When the Imperial Army starts firing that Howitzer, just such a gut wrenching scene. And then Katsumoto and Tom Cruise embracing... "I will miss our conversations"

Such a damn good movie and final battle scene.

Including when the soldiers bowed in a moment of respect to Katsumoto death.

Not favorite, but the most memorably fricked up I saw recently was from an old movie I can’t remember the name of and it was actually a POW movie.

This guy has been raising a dog in captivity. The dog kills a camp chicken and the dude is ordered to kill the dog. He starts screaming and crying that he doesn’t want to kill his dog while the entire camp stares at him.

In a later scene, they eat the dog in a really weird scene

One of the best shot scenes ever in my opinion and probably one of the most realistic in certain regards

That was the most realistic rendition of what combat was like that I can ever remember in film.
—My uncle was a Ranger in WW2. He said the only thing missing from that scene was the smells.

But to answer the OP: Patton— LINK

I didn't see Gunnery Sgt Hartman introducing himself to the platoon in Full Metal Jacket.

In Platoon, the first contact with Charlie during the nightime jungle ambush. The way the VC soldier appears right out of the jungle and walks up on the sleeping platoon is a great scene.

There are a lot of favorites but always keep in mind they are fiction and shot from multiple viewpoints.

I was a Marine grunt in 1969 and experienced more real combat that I care to mention. Two Purple Hearts.

You see war from only one viewpoint, first person. So for realism I go with Charlie Sheen’s dread of watching the NVA slowly creep toward him in the fog … and, then suddenly, chaos. That terror is real.

I really cringed when I first saw this scene. And the beginning scene of the final assault on the perimeter in Platoon was also a terrifying memory for me.

Overall, Hamburger Hill was the most realistic movie about Vietnam.

The landing at Peleliu in The Pacific is probably technically and textually the best combat scene I’ve ever seen. The other scene in that series that is absolutely above and beyond is storming the bunker on Peleliu.

I am quite convinced it’s the best work Spielberg and Hanks ever did regarding WWII, SPR and BoB included. They had perfected their craft by that point and had heard the wisdom of a thousand more voices who had experienced the real thing. They delve into the psychology and environment of the experience in a way I don’t think they had truly grasped yet in SPR or BoB.

SPR was ground-breaking in a way that BoB and The Pacific weren’t (specially the landing scene), but it ultimately wasn’t their best work.

Other honorable mentions: the recent movie The Outpost has several excellent, highly realistic scenes, and the Black Hawk Down Shughart / Gordon scenes are heart-breaking and extremely well done.

ETA: Infantry in Iraq. I look for realism, technical proficiency, accuracy, and scenes and dialogue that provoke memories of what I thought or would have thought had I been there.

I like the scene with the Roman legion fighting the Gauls in the beginning of Rome:

Opening Scene from Rome

Although I don't know this for sure, I imaging that is one of the more realistic examples of line/block formation fighting. Until Pullo goes rouge of course.
