Ending of The Departed (spoilers)

Somebody 'splain to me the final scene between Will Hunting and Marky Mark. Is Marky Mark another rat covering his tracks, or is he just out for revenge, and if so, how does he know about Will's true identity?

Hated him from the get go.

How does he know what really happened at the abandoned building?

Ya know...I don't really know.

Think he was out for revenge for Queenan's death and not Billy's.

Was lazy and turned an incredible movie into just an above-average one.

I always just kinda thought Colin's girl got Dignan the recordings of him somehow.

Costigan got recordings of conversations between Sullivan and Costello to Dr. Vera Farmiga. I think the assumption is that Vera Farmiga found Dignam and informed him that Sullivan is the rat. Then Dignam kills Sullivan for revenge over Queenan's death.

Something like this, I think.

I think that the idea of the movie is that in the end all of the rats get what's coming to them. Damon's character had to die for it to be evened out and all the rats to die.

Yep. Costello himself was a rat and he bought it as well

What a deep idea

I'm no critic. I loved the movie until the end. I thought it was lazy to just kill everyone off in a matter of seconds. The ending sort of ruined it for me. I still like the movie a lot, but it could've been one of the best, but ended up being just better than average IMO.
Sorry my opinion doens't match up with yours. :o/

I don't know about deep, but that's what I got out of the actual rat showing up in the closing shots. It was to remind or show the viewer that the central idea of the whole movie was ratting. There were other moments of emphasis on the word "rat" throughout the movie if I remember correctly. It would have been a completely imbalanced movie if Damon's character hadn't died.
And there's no point in being a smartass.
