I don't know about deep, but that's what I got out of the actual rat showing up in the closing shots. It was to remind or show the viewer that the central idea of the whole movie was ratting. There were other moments of emphasis on the word "rat" throughout the movie if I remember correctly. It would have been a completely imbalanced movie if Damon's character hadn't died.

And there's no point in being a smartass.

Sorry if that came off as mocking you. It wasn't. You're right, that was the movie's message. I just thought it was simplistic and lame.

That's fair. I generally think that Scorsese is overrated. In the world of what he glorifies that is one of the true ultimate deep sentiments. I think that it's kind of lame too.

the ending is suitable for the story.

In actual mob history, the killing does not stop until there is one man left.

And it would have been stupid to keep Matt Damon living.

maybe so, but was the rat necessary? How stupid does Scorsese expect his audience to be?

Eh it's symbolism. To the story...

When it comes down to it, the Scorsese films that I have seen are above average action flicks that try to be a little more than they actually are. The blunt symbolism is very fitting for the type of movie that it is and the type of audience that it typically would attract.

Also, seeing the mouse in the last shot was worth a chuckle to round off the movie.

I don't understand why killing people off comes across as lazy writing. I guess Casino, Reservoir Dogs, Seven Samurai, Tombstone, etc. were all average movies due to lazy writing.

Exactly. If you take that last shot so seriously, it's YOUR fault, not lazy writing.

The actual rat on screen keeps this movie from being one of the greats.

Shockingly, you completely missed what I said.

I never said that killing people = lazy writing. but killing 4 or 5 people within a matter of seconds (minutes if you count Damon) seemed lazy to me. It felt like they didn't know exactly how to end things, so he was just like "frick it, let's kill everybody and be done with it." It felt like it wasn't thought out like the rest of the movie was.

And like I said, it's still an above-average movie IMO...so don't act like I hate it. I just think it could've been one of the greats, but the end brought it down a lot.

FWIW, I've never seen 7S, but the rest of the movies you listed are ones that I either like (Casino) or love (RD and Tombstone). Again, to reiterate...people dying is not what I have a problem with.

the Japanese Infernal Affairs Trilogy is a far better watch than the Departed... and I like the Departed

Shockingly? Don't be a dick I didn't miss what you typed. Casino also had an ending where everyone died within minutes of eachother sans sam rothstein. iirc reservoir dogs also had an ending where everyone died in the last few minutes, but i haven't seen it in a few years.

I obviously enjoyed the ending. Billy being killed off came as a complete surprise to me, but it would make sense that Costello would have other rats in the police force. I like that Mr French goes out in a blaze of glory and then shoots himself so isn't behind a jail cell for the rest of his life. Sullivan ends up killing Costello because he finds out he is an informant for the FBI, and then Dignam honers Queenan's death by putting a bullet in Sullivan's head. It doesn't come across as lazy to me. In my opinion it ties up the story really well. It would have been lazy writing if everyone ended up in jail and Billy got the girl in the end.

And that's fine. I disagree, which is why I said:

IMO

..earlier. In my opinion, it was a lazy and rushed ending that took a lot away from an otherwise awesome movie.

:(

Let's not forget that you threw out your "critics/hilarious" bullshite first.

So because 4 people died in the last 10 minutes of the movie it makes it lazy writing? Were Casino and Reservoir Dogs victims of lazy writing as well? I would like to hear what ending you think would have made this movie better.

I really am not trying to be a dick, except in my first post, and I regret coming across that way. You're an awesome poster and we share a lot of similar tastes in movies and tv series.

Is Marky Mark another rat covering his tracks, or is he just out for revenge, and if so, how does he know about Will's true identity?

I thought it was pretty obvious that Marky Mark was there for revenge, and for knowing matt damon was the rat.
Did you not notice that not only did his wife leave him, but his neighbors avoided him? I think it was pretty well known that Damon was a rat, but there was no hard proof to do anything about it.

I disagree, it was marky mark not wearing a hair net before he shot damon. Completely ruined the entire 2 hours of the movie, because of that one minute detail.
