I'd give it a solid 6/10

“D” isn’t solid in my house.
I’d give it a B-/C+, but I love Marvel, and nostalgia is a bitch.
It saddens me that Marvel sacrifices stories for ideology.

I think you're both correct.

There was a human element in this one that resonated where previous efforts have been lacking in favor of spectacle.

That said, the story critiques above are valid.

I enjoyed it far more than I expected (I'm not a mega fan and don't know most of these characters) and would recommend it to anyone looking for something more from recent comic movies.

I think gone are the days when every movie they released was going to moonwalk its way to top 25 all time box office numbers,

The trouble with building towards IW/End Game big bads is people now see these movies as just appetizers to the main course. “Meh I’ll just wait until it’s on Disney+ or read about the mid credit scene online. “ They’re no longer event films, just another episode in a long running series. This movie with none of the true A list characters doing similar numbers to a brand name like Captain America is probably a win for them.

Having Bucky and Yelena certainly doesn't hurt but yeah it's nice to see Marvel can still put out solid movies. Hopefully they can start making these movies feel more connected and not just a bunch of random events with characters we hardly got to know

What was the budget on this one? I haven’t seen hard numbers and haven’t particularly looked closely. I see it opened high enough it should make some money in theory unless it’s another crazy high cost production.

Saw it tonight and enjoyed it. Not a great movie but definitely a kind of return to form and proof that Marvel can still put together a coherent movie that doesn’t just feel like a bunch of attention grabbing set piece scenes spliced together. This is probably the best character building they’ve done since what, I don’t even know? I wanted to say No Way Home, but going even further than that maybe Ragnarok?

No shocker that Esquire would know THAT source material.

David Harbor and Jennifer Pugh with their fake Russian accents has to be the most obnoxious thing I have heard in recent times. I felt like David Harbor was trying too hard to be funny.

Overall the movie was a popcorn flick. I will probably not remember a single thing about the movie in two months

The movie is changing its name officially to The New Avengers.
Posters changed on AMC and other places.

The overall story and writing were lacking though.

It's kind of weird to say but while I agree that the story was lacking, I thought the writing was quite strong and a large reason why the movie has been accepted so positively.

I thought the character stuff was good, but the story plot was a little nonsensical at times. Maybe part of that is I hadn’t seen the Cap movie from earlier in the year and didn’t remember some of the characters from Black Widow so well.

Just little dumb stuff like having a countdown clock for the people you are about to murder seems so lame. The whole Valentina project was not fleshed out at all. How did Bob get to the bunker ina a box? The head of that project just forgot to tell Val about him! Not explaining the dark Sentry’s powers and what exactly was happening there. All little things that made the story just feel a little off for me.

But your opinion is based on someone else's opinion

You can say it 1000 times, and it still won’t be true. Because my opinion is based on the 24 marvel movies (16 years) I watched as well as the reviews for them, which generally coincided with what I saw on the screen.

So there is clearly a track record on which I am basing, my opinion.

DC is somewhat different, as I care less about those characters or the IP in general but I did see a boat load of those movies as well. Including bombs like Black Adam & Blue Beetle.

Knock yourself out with baseless claims as you want but the facts will always say otherwise.

Hopefully it can slow it down without breaking it.
