re: Disney tacitly admits it made a multi-billion dollar mistake with 'Star Wars' land

The editorial isn't interested in financial analysis. It's the typical beating of a dead Kennedy. Makes sense, as that's what the people here eat up. Won't stop, can't stop, it seems.

The rot of Kathleen Kennedy is slowly melting away.
This.
Once they do 1-2 rides based on the Prequels and OT that have the same production value as the Rise of the Resistance ride they will be fine.

This. If I was in charge of star wars, live action KOTOR would be priority number 1 (this would be a series similar to Andor in scope and quality. Each game would cover a season of television with at least 10, but preferably 12 hour long episodes), video game KOTOR would be priority 2 (remake of KOTOR 1 & 2 in the style of FFVII Rebirth with a third installment to be written), and turning Battu at Disney World into Tatooine would be priority 3 (There would be a cantina for concerts, a pod-racing ride, dining at jabba’s palace, etc. It would be an easy money maker).

Game of Thrones level of palace intrigue within the various factions under the Sith Empire banner if done properly would be a literal license to print money.

I’m gonna actually side with Kathleen here - building based on the new Star Wars rather than the old Star Wars was the right call, IF they had gotten the movies right. The issue is they butchered the movies and they didn’t take off with kids like they expected, and interest faded as the movies went on and ended rather than increased
No, it was actually retarded, and Iger deserves a ton of heat for going along with the idea. His people at Disney knew it was the wrong thing to do, but he deferred to Kennedy, who doesn't have a creative bone in her body.
Even if the Disney trilogy had been handled better, the primary customer (the person buying tickets) was/is still going to be attached to the original trilogy, and there's nothing the sequel trilogy could have done to replace the cultural icon that was the Lucas trilogy. Disney spent $2 billion to build Galaxy's Edge based on concepts and characters that consumers have long moved on from.

At the same time, I think Star Wars needs to get back to its roots: samurai movies, westerns, and swashbuckling adventures. A flawed wide-eyed protagonist, mentored by a wise but world-wearied mentor assembles a motley crew of misfits and scoundrels (read diverse interesting characters) who band together to fight evil. Through the course of the story, everyone learns something, everyone grows, their character arcs resolve, and the Galaxy is saved.
It’s not rocket science, or even rocket science fiction. It’s the standard hero’s journey.

I would be fine with that too.

Lucas was very straighforward about following Joseph Campbell's formula.

wrong. The move forward should have been making EU movies and not try to create something new.

Some of the EU sucks. Some is good. Someone who actually lives and breathes Star Wars should have been given the opportunity to sort through it and make a trilogy out of some content from the EU.

I have been to Galaxy's Edge twice before this change and I thought it was awesome each time.
My in-laws went two weeks ago and said it was meh. It must have been because of these changes?
ETA- apparently the changes didn't go into effect yet.

Forward looking? Force Awakens was a carbon copy of A New Hope.
I remember watching Force Awakens in theaters. It felt bizarre, like when you have a dream of someone who passed away a long time ago. Seeing Han in his 70s still running around trying to make it as a smuggler was sad, pathetic even.
After Han's own son killed him (almost as awful as Anakin killing little kids in the prequels), Chewie walked by Leia as if they didn't even know each other and as if the main man in both of their lives hadn't just been mercilessly killed. All so they could force a moment with Leia and the new girl. The Force is female I guess.
The real killer is that Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy was brilliant. If they could use AI to make a high-quality version of that someday, that would be something.
They tried to improvise a massive movie franchise trilogy on the fly. Complete morons. They couldn't have done a better job of killing Star Wars if they had tried to on purpose.

The changes don't take place until the end of the month.

They had such an opportunity with the hotel that it amazes me how they fumbled it.
Honestly, it was an insane concept.
You were just supposed to stay there and like talk to generic star wars characters? for 4k a night
They should have just made a star wars cruise ship or something,

Don't focus the land on characters people like, focus it instead on the new movies, Kennedy said. And Iger listened.
