Did “New Girl”’s name hurt the show

Started rewatching it this week and forgot how much it makes me laugh.

Obviously, it started as a show that Zoey Deschanel was supposed to lead, but she ended up being the weakest character of the show.

Seems like many would pass on the show because of the title alone, thinking it’s a chick show, when really it’s a hilarious male-driven comedy.

The first couple seasons of that show are legitemetly great. New Girl is a bad title, but Zoey is the reason that show was made and why many people initially watched.

Yep.

But I think they originally did intend it to be centered around zoey until they realized what good chemistry the cast had so they pivoted

Marketing didn’t help. Even after the show figured out that the show shouldn’t be about Jess, they still advertised it like it was about her

Gee...sort of like Jerry in Seinfeld.

It’s pretty fun, they have the rules online that stick as close as possible to the show.

New Girl is probably one of my Mt Rushmore sitcoms, but it’s hard to convince my guy friends to watch it because of the title. It’s not a girly show in the least, minus maybe the Nick and Jess plot.

My brother used to make fun of me for watching it when it was originally airing. This last month during safe at home orders he decided to give it a chance b/c he wanted to understand the jokes my wife and I still reference from it and now it's one of his favorite shows.

Took me years to give it a try (and I like Zooey generally) and I immediately regretted waiting so long. It’s really the other characters that carry the show, but it’s great overall.

Did this with friends with rules we found online. Can confirm what they say in the show...it’s mostly drinking, like 90%

The episode where Schmidt wants Winston to embrace is blackness and they go try to score some crack while Jess, Nick and Co. are in the log cabin is one of the funniest episodes of any show I’ve ever seen

So...it did what many shows do. It evolved.

I don't believe the name hurt it at all.

New Girl is such an amazing show. I will say my first watch, I didn’t like Zoey’s character but she had the same effect as Leslie Knope for me. The more I rewatch the more you realize how much she goes out the way for the people around her. So while annoying, she acts as a glue for what would most definitely be worse off people without her.

She definitely had her purpose, like you said, as the glue, but really she just became a vehicle to drive the plot to the shenanigans that Nick, Winston and Schmidt were getting into.

Season 3 and 4 are probably my favorite because it was a true ensemble cast with Coach in the mix.

I as others have said on here 100% did not watch the show at first because of the name. I remember after i started watching it on Netflix and told my circle of friends about it i got all kinds of shite from them for talking up "New girl"...then they all watched and love.

So yes the name for sure hurt it

Once it became clear how completely insane he was it took the show to a new level
