Netflix has ordered a drama series based on the award-winning Chinese book series “The Three-Body Problem” with David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo set to write and executive produce.
The series order covers all three books in the trilogy — “The Three-Body Problem,” “The Dark Forest,” and “Death’s End,” all of which were written by Liu Cixin. They tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. Netflix struck a deal with The Three-Body Universe and Yoozoo Group for the rights to produce an English-language adaptation of the books.
“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”
The project boasts an all-star lineup behind the camera. In addition to Benioff, Weiss, and Woo, Rian Johnson serves as executive producer along with Brad Pitt and Rosamund Pike. Cixin and Ken Liu, who wrote the English versions of the first and third books, serve as consulting producers.

The book series is great, but I have no faith in these two to adapt it. It's pretty high concept, and the dialogue can be dense given the cultural differences. They won't be able to lean on the source material nearly as well as they did for the early seasons of Game of Thrones.

I'm really not sure how adaptable these books are.

I have heard the series is remarkable.
While I don't have much faith in the Dynamic Duds if they have someone holding their hands and keeping them from disappearing up their own rectums they could do alright with this.

Its one of my favorites. Though every person I have let borrow the books haven't gotten past the first one.

Pumped these books are being adapted to a series, disappointed it being done by them.

The series is so fricking out there that this may be impossible to adapt. The concepts are so dense and theoretical, that it’s not going to be the average American who can sit down and digest this show (or average Chinese for that matter). It’s just a massive mind bend. However, unlike a lot of people on here, I think these guys are pretty damn good writers and are pretty good at distilling things. I just think this will be a far more difficult adaptation than aSoIaF.

i thought Amazon had secured the rights to this a couple years ago for a ton of money?

They destroyed the only thing that gave them legitimacy. They don't deserve to be considered a "draw" and they shouldn't be.

Great series. Each book in the series is wildly different and has a different set of characters.
I wonder if they'll approach it as three separate limited series, with different casts, tones, and visual styles. That would make the most sense if they are trying to stick to the books' narratives. I would have called this series "unadaptable to a visual medium," so they'll likely be heavily altering the story.

D&D helmed the best show on television for 4 or 5 seasons. They get a pass.

Why are people listing executive producers as though they are an indication of quality? This isn't how production works.

I have no interest in D&D after they rushed the ending of GoT to go work on a terrible Star Wars concept that was promptly cancelled.
George not finishing the books did not force Season 8 to be 6 long episodes of disconnected garbage.

I disagree. They did an incredible adaptation of Game of Thrones up to the point that they passed up the source material.
The fact that the source material is complete for this one is great.
