re: Christopher Nolan and amateur film critics

I know Nolan has hurt some of your feelings here because all y’all want to talk about is Spielberg and Scorsese.

Film is very subjective and I doubt very much he is batting 1.000 with a lot of movie goers for that very reason. However - and I know this isn't a popular metric - he is batting 1.000 with the critics. Of the films he has made:

Following (1998): 87% on Rotten Tomatoes
Memento (2000): 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
Insomnia (2002): 92% on Rotten Tomatoes
Batman Begins (2005): 85% on Rotten Tomatoes
The Prestige (2006): 77% on Rotten Tomatoes
The Dark Knight (2008): 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
Inception (2010): 86% on Rotten Tomatoes
The Dark Knight Rises (2012): 87% on Rotten Tomatoes
Interstellar (2014): 73% on Rotten Tomatoes
Dunkirk (2017): 92% on Rotten Tomatoes
Tenet (2020): 70% on Rotten Tomatoes
Oppenheimer (2023): 93% on Rotten Tomatoes
The Odyssey (2026): 94% on Rotten Tomatoes

Not a single "rotten" film on this list. That's a pretty decent critical track record and the audience scores for all of those films are pretty high as well - though Tenet admittedly as his lowest audience score (76%).

Nobody is saying thata trope "automatically ruins a movie". A lot of great films use familiar storytelling tools all the freaking time. The problem is when a filmmaker relies on a predictable mechanism and the audience notices the strings holding it up.... Understanding why something works doesn't invalidate it, sometimes that's exactly why it fails. A magician can still amaze you even though you know the trick but if you see the strings you're allowed to criticize the illusion.

Tarantino may be the most overrated director in the history of the art form.

Are high-schoolers just discovering weed considered critics?

Mainstream music critics have been notoriously hard on Tool, despite their massive popularity. A good reminder that sometimes the masses like garbage music.
