I also thought that was his shtick. Like, everything he is great in, he's being an a-hole.
It was to a degree but it’s hard to say if he was just playing himself or gradually became the character he was playing similar to how “The Dice Man” was just a character Andrew Dice Clay did as part of his act but as it became more and more popular it morphed into his entire personality.

On the Norm Macdonald show he seemed pretty genuine and not a dick, so I agree with the above. Sad to hear he's in a wheelchair and Murray is in poor health. Is all that true?

Chevy Chase Show
His show ran against an infomercial for a painting tool called The Paint Stick. The Paint Stick got better ratings.
Chevy was also arrested for DUI during or right after the show’s run. Someone pointed out that his blood alcohol level was higher than his ratings had ever been.

He was a dick until he became irrelevant from a Movie/TV standpoint. JB and Murray hated him bc he left SNL for Movies. They saw him as a sell out. JB instigated the fight and Murray went after him at the first opportunity. He was a huge coke head (who wasn’t) in the late 70s to late 80s. He was a bad one where he became more of an a-hole the higher her got. There is a funny doc/movie about the guy who wrote Caddy Shack. Chevy is portrayed pretty accurately per Chevy. Big dickhead to everyone. Supposedly, once he sobered up and became less relevant he mellowed a huge amount. (Post Spies like us/ Three Amigos.). Several bombs after those movies.

Got into a fistfight with Bill Murray
I bet Chevy would’ve beat Murray’s arse. Looked to have a physical advantage. Pretty tall.

Gotta admit, that's pretty savage.
I think I love Bill Murray’s subdued response of “Medium Talent” more.

RDSr didnt die until 2021. Not sure how you demean a kids dad about going to hell, 36 years before he died?

Cornelius has always been a privileged, arrogant, douche.

The Murray-Chase fight was stoked by John Belushi.
Belushi an instigator? Never

By the time they arrived at the doors of SNL, their rivalry had hit fever-pitch, as authors Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad in the book Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live note: “They had a knack for goading each other”. Hill and Weingrad go on to explain, “The first day Belushi arrived on the 17th floor, he walked into Chevy’s office and pointed at the picture of Jacqueline Carlin [Chase’s girlfriend] on Chevy’s desk. ‘Oh, you have one of those too?’ he said. ‘You’ve got the regular one. I’ve got the one with the donkey dick'”.

No wonder he doesn’t get any work
he's pretty old at this point, no? I'd think he aint working by choice.

He didn't have a high level enough of charisma to pull off as a talk show host.

Hard to believe, but he's 79 years old.

Also probably because he’s old as shite and doesn’t want to anymore.
Residuals for Christmas Vacation must net him 7 figures a year. That fricking movie is on one channel or another every day during the holiday season.

He was shitting over RDSr’s career, which had pretty much hit the skids around the time he released Up The Academy in 1980.
IOW, Chevy just went out of his way to be an a-hole to someone he just met by talking shite about their dad. That was part of a long week of Chevy doing crap like this to the point where Lorne Michaels was furious with him.

The house in Christmas Vacation is the same house as the one they used in the Lethal Weapon movies.
I think that was the neighbors house. The one’s that hated the Griswalds.

Imagine if he had burned all his bridges making the first National Lampoon's Vacation movie.
Not for lack of trying.
Chris Columbus was supposed to direct Christmas Vacation. He met with Chevy Chase twice to discuss the movie and after the second meeting he walked off the project saying he’d never work with Chase ever again.
Went on to direct Home Alone which was a box office smash.
