watched the first 20 minutes of "The Big Sleep" other night on TCM and in that time 2 (and possibly 3) dames he meets immediately fall for or throws herself at him. A few pithy remarks from Bogie and it's lights out.
I wonder if guys back in the 40's were as perplexed as myself at how a short, unattractive, gruff looking dude was pulling in so much tail. I know it's a movie (make believe) but it's not even remotely believable. whatever.

Dorothy Malone as bookstore clerk would definitely get it.
And attractive women are frequently with men with are less attractive and it is not just a money thing either. Believe it or not there are women who actually value a man with character etc. Get off of social media and meet real women with values.

Not for nothing, but she wasn't a bad looking old broad in her late 60s -

you forgot the lisp. Bogart from 1939-1951 was pretty impressive. He could do line readings like no one else. Check out the scene when he tells Mary Astor that he’s giving her up in The Maltese Falcon. It’s almost FedEx guy level of speed talking. But intense.

Being someone they got along with and thought they could love was more important. Nobody was posting their life on the internet with filters or getting plastic surgery.

He didn't have a whole lot of range as an actor, either.

he was a movie star. Played the same role in every film - brash guy who talked fast and was blunt. But he was perfect at it and the studio loved him.

same way of delivering his lines. Short and fast

—oh brother. When you reach that level of stardom, people go to see the star, not to critique his stylistic nuances.
Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, etc

He had dressed himself up as a crazy person in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, as well. He was brilliant in most of his "non-detective" roles, but Caine Mutiny was different.
The crew and onlookers gave him a standing ovation after cut in the courtroom scene. That just doesn't happen, often (Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, also a courtroom scene.)

Bogey had one of the great faces of all time. Not saying he's good looking, but just an expressive and somewhat sad and dropey face.

The role was intended for Cary Grant
FWIW, this was probably the closest Bogart ever came to playing himself. He was the preppie son of a NY doctor and was on his way to Yale when WWI broke out and he joined the navy.

Best the Devil is a good flick sort of a comedy in the Maltese falcon vein with two gorgeous female leads.

I am relatively certain women did not think he was unattractive

He came off as very masculine . Women love that.
