Since today is the anniversary, I rewatched the film earlier this week. One of the few modern military films I love. Great sequences and I believe pretty respectful of the events that occurred.
Still amazed by the amount of actors in the film who were not huge or were still considered minor that became massive stars. Tom Hardy, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Orlando Bloom, Ty Burrell along with established actors like Sam Sheppard, Tom Sizemore, Jason Isaacs, and William Fichtner. Great cast and performances overall. I actually cared about the soldiers because of the character development. One of Ridley Scott’s best films.

Tom Hardy is barely recognizable in this move he was so young. Same with Waldau and Orlando Bloom.

It was an outstanding film and, according to a couple of the real life players, it was fairly accurately depicted.
I know one of the Delta guys. He and I served together before he went with Group and then Delta. He's long retired and then first time I have seen him in years was at our annual reunion last year. He's working for Rathion or one of those companies .... maybe it's Booz Allen I can't remember.
He never was much of a talker and non of us pressed him on any of it but he did say it was fairly accurately depicted and that Scott had talked to a lot of them about scenes and sequences .... the ones who were out and could talk about it within reason. He wasn't one of them. He was a short timer when the book came out and, unlike the SEALS, most of Delta are not publicity seakers.
People would be shocked at the rivalry between various units and how much respect the SEALS have lost over the past decade or so amongst the different units.

Should've reinstated napalm usage and smeared it all over, or just nuked all of Somalia after that.
Just start over. Anything is an improvement.

I did a thread years ago about this. It's unreal how many famous actors (today) that were in that movie.
And on top of that, it's just a great movie anyway.
ETA: Finally found it.
And actually found a thread even older than mine about the same thing (along with others).
By my count, there were at least 29 actors in it that are recognizable (either from slightly to easily) today. Crazy.

It's a fantastic example of how good a movie can be when it commits to not spoonfeeding us a ton of backstory.
It succeeds because it doesn't derail the momentum and intensity of the events by giving us a Pearl Harbor style love triangle. It's a propulsive look at actual war, and shows the characters through that lens. The characters develop through their responses to the action, not through maudlin flashbacks that detract from the story.
It's also brave enough to not have a traditional protagonist, but roll with the ensemble instead. And it has a heck of an ensemble. I'm a big fan of it.

I remember seeing it in theaters and being jacked the hell up when Eric Bana's character was going back in to fight some more. It was like "Whew, this is over...wait, that dude is going back in? Holy shite!" He was a badass.

There’s something about war epics that tends to draw great ensembles. Saving Private Ryan is the same way, great actors in the main cast and tons more with small cameos.
ETA: the directors of those two movies probably has something to do with it too

Oh yeah. Hardy looks like whiskey tango in the movie. Once I saw Jaime’s jawline, I knew it was him.

Interesting that both Bana and Hardy are in the film. Their performances are great and they’d both go on to being the villains in some of the worst Star Trek films ever made. Meanwhile Grimes is played by Ewan McGregor who is Obi-Wan Kenobi lol.

Also why Band of Brothers is so great.

Can’t forget about Jeremy Piven and Kim Coates

Well, it did help that, for probably the first time in film history, the current members of the same military units (3rd Ranger Battalion and 160th SOAR) depicted their predecessors on film (at least for the flying and fast roping scenes).
Now, there were more limited examples of this with individual participants in events such as To Hell and Back and The Longest Day, etc., but never on a unit-sized basis at this level of precision.
In fact, Ridley had to get special permission to film because he was technically importing an elite military unit into a foreign country.

Yep. "Recent history" movies have the luxury of access to the actual people there. They're on set as technical advisors. Generation Kill was a great, underrated miniseries. Rudy Reyes's character was depicted by the real live Rudy Reyes.

Yes. And the actor who played Jamie Lannister is one of the Delta snipers who goes to the rescue of the 2nd downed helicopter.
