So to clarify, the topic is the best performance by a male actor you've ever seen in a movie and the best performance by an actress you've ever seen in a movie.

Male: I'd have to say Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa in "Inglorious Basterds."

Female: Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in "The Silence of the Lambs"

I thought she was the weakest actor in that movie.

And she was better in The Accused. Bad choice.

"Ever" (as in GOAT) is quite a challenge. Lead vs support should also be in the equation - almost all the truly great performances are going to be in support - yet great leads should be recognized for the challenge.

Having said that -

Male: Al Pacino - The Godfather (implicitly 1 and 2 and they are virtually equal in my book - but, if I have to pick G2)

Female: Frances McDormand - Fargo

Male: Tom Hanks - Saving Private Ryan

Female: Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine

I wish we could count Band of Brothers. Lots to choose from there for the males.

Heath Ledger as the Joker . I say this because the I could not see any remnant of Heath Ledger in his portrayal of that character.

Charlize Theron in Monster .

I can't stand her politics or her personality ... but Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice would have to be up there for me in the female category. (Kevin Kline was excellent in his lead as well.)

As far as the men go ... hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I would have to say maybe either Liam Neeson in Schindler's List or either Ben Kingsley in Ghandi.

Male: Nic Cage in Con Air. When he tells Billy Bedlam to put the bunny back in the box...wow.

Female: Tea Leoni in Deep Impact. Her ability to hold the same facial expression in every scene is a triumph of method acting.

In reality, I don't know how I could. There are so many great performances in so many genres and styles, it's pretty impossible for me. Even acting in true stories vs fantasy is hard to compare.

I think I've been suffering from Tom Hanks fatigue for about a decade now.

She may be the greatest female lead in the world right now ... from her Elizabeth I roles to Veronica Guerin, The Gift, The Missing, etc., etc., etc., she is just incredible.

Eh not a movie but Peter Dinklage in the trial scene of Joffreys murder in GOT is the GOAT for me. By no means can I differentiate good acting from great acting though.

A true connoisseur. You beat me to Streep in Sophie's Choice by 90 seconds while I was contemplating.

Sure cannot argue with your other two licks as well. Juat rewatched LoA a couple of weeks ago for about the ninth time ... he gave us an incredible portrayal. Also loved him in a little known underrated 1985 flick by the name of 'Creator.' Highly recommend that little movie ... and your wife or girlfriend will love it.

I know that’s why he’s a tough pick for something like this. But he made that movie what it was. Perfectly.

Cate is fantastic.
