Listen I can't speak for Paul, but I know his mother's urine has to be collected above the thigh pads.

I get that, but I will say, IMHO, Lynch is (was?) a fantastic director of other people's material, particularly The Elephant Man and Dune.

I like him. I do get that folks are turned off by the "Lynchian strangeness" that pervades his original works, but Dune was a brilliant (compromised by all the limitations surrounding a feature film) and beautifully flawed adaptation of the material, and with that said:

I’ll leave it at that

...as well.

Will you goobers calm down? I was only stating the practical/gross reason for the cod piece. I wasn't saying that there shouldn't be a cod piece. I'm a cod piece fan. I wear one to work almost daily.

It’s not the weirdness that gets me.

He survives on the “that is intentional” excuse, for example I find the acting corny or the score/music overbearing in twin peaks. Everyone always say it’s intentional but I don’t care, it ruins the show for me.

I have watched enough of his stuff to know there is greatness in his work but it’s just not my brand of weird.

I have to agree with you here. I tried to watch the show twice and I could never get through more than a few episodes. Like you said, the overbearing score and acting just makes it exhausting to watch.

I just read Dune for the first time and I'm debating whether or not it's worth it to watch Lynch's version before this comes out. From the few clips/trailers I've seen, I've got pretty serious doubts that I'll be a fan.

This guy fricking gets it. May be time to do a reread to hold me over. First Sci-Fi fantasy type movie I've actually been looking forward to in God knows how long since superhero movies and star wars have cornered the market and are mostly shite.

I think it remains to be seen if Dune can appeal to a general audience.
I personally can’t wait, looks fantastic.

I just bought the book today. I’ve read a lot of sci fi but for no good reason avoided the series.

The Lynch production was ambitious but flawed. The stellar cast was betrayed the the studio's decision to shorten the movie to a little more than two hours. The plot was changed to include the idiotic weirding modules storyline. The Harkonnens were turned into cartoon characters when they were much more devious and dangerous in the books. The Sci-Fi Channel production was more true to the books but the cast was really sub-par.

It is is heartening to see a direcotr of Villeneuve's quality attempt to tackle Dune yet again. Unfortunately for him, Frank Herbert's son, Brian, will be the executive producer. He managed to take a science fiction masterpiece and butcher and bastardize it with a series of prequels and sequels. A Nazi-style book-burning of those books would not erase the sins that were committed against the Father on their pages.

However, one can hope against hope that Mr. Herbert will stay out of Villeneuve's way and that Dune will finally receive the cinematic portrayal it deserves

I am an unabashed fan of the Lynch film. But more for nostalgic reasons. Go ahead and watch it. It's enjoyable enough for what it is. Since you've already read the books, certain parts will drive you crazy.

I'm abashed, but still a huge fan of it. It was perfectly cast for the time and it looked beautiful on the big screen. Lynch went a little too Lynch here and there. My biggest gripe was that the mystery of the spice wasn't at the forefront as it was in the book. By the time they edited the film for TV, the mystery of the spice was explained in the damn prologue.
