You know, I was going wait to wait until seeing the film to bring this up, but there was a TON of discussion around this idea when this was all announced and the cast became bigger and bigger. I'm wondering if the structure, if having a Fiege in charge centrally, if being so staunchly consistent that some directors like Wright are basically told "Thank you, but no," IS a good thing. All of those issues fueled discussion, and now it looks like, in theory, that may have been smart on the MCU side.

Or maybe it's just THIS creative team that wasn't up to building this type of universe using this film correctly. Either way, it's incredibly enlightening and will be a lesson for everyone to learn.

If you put a gun to my head I'd say it was this particular team more so than the strategy...though I disliked the strategy from the start. I was always in favor of someone like Bruce Timm being the Fiege role for DC, simply because he had been behind essentially the same world building on the animated side. He seems to have an intuitive understanding of the universe and it's characters. I'd have felt comfortable knowing that he was the person steering things from behind the scenes. Water under the bridge...

I will see this movie, either tonight or Saturday. I HOPE the movie is good, and the critics are just missing the point.

Like a lot of other posters, when it came to the comic books, I preferred DC to Marvel, and I would love to see my favorite characters brought to the big screen in a good way. To me, that's the "Marvel MCU" way, where the movies tend to be fun and adventurous, and the characters tend to bring a sense of hope and optimism with them.
Re all this dark, bleak appearance (and the Watchmen comparisons), I don't want that. Superman and Wonder Woman should be more along the same tone as Captain America, bright and colorful, and inspirational, not dark and grim.

Someone further back in the thread mentioned John Carter, and I think that's a legitimate danger: that movie was ostracized because it strayed too far from the original character and story, and because a lot of viewers felt the action and plot was too similar to other movies. This runs the same risk- you're getting very far away from most of our concepts of Superman here, and the action and conflicts will mirror what we get from Marvel.
And the most important comparison- a failure with this movie will likely result in us not seeing this universe further expanded on the big screen.

This is why we can't have nice things.

1. The vast majority of these comic book movies are dogshit and an insult to the source material.

2. Zack Snyder has directed roughly 10 flicks and 1.5 of them are watchable.

3. This movie looked terrible from the start.

4. Please stop giving these people your money or it will never stop.

This is a silly sentiment. That's not at all sacking up. What you mean is:

Hold your nose and give them your money thus justifying bad decisions on their part.

Hyperbole. I agree that they're not great films, really flawed actually, but still enjoyable. Not all films have to be Citizen Kane.

I agree that they can be enjoyable, but if this film exceeds the insane level of CGI destruction that Man Of Steel threw at us, I would challenge the amount of enjoyment that one could get from this film. Honestly, CGI destruction in these movies (I am a lifelong comicbook fan) is ridiculous and honestly makes the movie unwatchable.

Really? I'm not big on donating to billion dollar corporations that give lax effort.

They really need your $15 though, so they know their system still works and people still buy into their game because well, the average audience is dumb, right? We don't have a clue about writing or character development, just want explosions and eye candy with sex appeal.

Throw your money at it, keep them believing we're all idiots, and then you'll keep getting idiot movies.

Same.

I don't mind the mindless superhero action flick with a good film score. Makes it enjoyable for what it is.

Zack Snyder on the film:
quote:

"I’m a comic book guy and I made the movie based as much as I could on that aesthetic. And so I don’t know how else to do it 100%, so it is what it is."
Henry Cavill:
quote:

"The interesting thing is that we get the critics who have their personal opinions. And the thing about personal opinions is that they always come from a place. And there’s a preconceived idea which you have to get past a critic before you start writing your article or your review, and that affects everything. What is really going to matter, I believe, is what the audience says. Because they’re the ones who are buying tickets, they’re the ones who want to see more of this kind of story or not and so the audience’s voice is loudest and after this weekend the audience, at least partly, will have spoken."
Ben Affleck apparently had nothing to say.

Then watch the animated comics. Much cheaper.

I just get really annoyed when Hollywood thinks it can just push anything into theaters and slap a name on it, and expect people to throw money at it. I'm sure to an extent execs think exactly that.

I hope this movie tanks and loses money big time.

You left out Amy Adams.

I don't that's necessarily what went on here. I think they wanted to make a quality movie, but put it in the hands of the wrong man.

The perfect quote to basically say : "Just go see the movie and give me money anyways".

No, I won't give your movie my time and money Amy Adams, and for some odd reason, I don't think you'll end up on welfare if I don't.
