From custom Crocs to a special Prada line to gay pride parade floats, Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' movie has attracted more than 100 promotional partners and generated countless headlines.
Selling a summer tentpole is more expensive than ever, and more complicated, amid the proliferation of social media and as the box office continues to find its footing following the pandemic. It’s commonplace for a Hollywood studio to spend just as much, if not more, to market an event pic as it does to actually make the movie. The price tag of a global marketing campaign for a big event title is usually $100 million or more.
Then there are promotional partnership deals, which can be worth tens of millions. Barbie has attracted more than 100 such partners. From custom pink Crocs to a Prada clothing line to hair dryers — and everything in between. Merchants and brands rushed to cash in on Barbie mania, while companies including Progressive Insurance and General Motors used Barbie in custom TV and digital advertisements. All told, these partnerships are worth at least $70 million to Warner Bros. and toymaker Mattel, home of Barbie. And the value of the publicity the film has generated is immeasurable, from local TV news spot to features in Architectural Digest and The New Yorker. Stories about Barbie have become ubiquitous.
quote:
Rival studio executives commend Warners and Mattel for what they say is a marketing campaign for the ages. “Barbie will be very, very profitable,” says one such source, adding that Warners is wisely focusing on the cool and fun factor, versus nostalgia. The source, who pays close attention to tracking, says social media metrics kept showing gains. So did box office projections. When it first came on official tracking, Barbie was pacing for a healthy $80 million opening. By earlier this week, that number had jumped to a huge $110 million. “People go to movies to have fun. They want a ride,” continues the source.

I've been trying not to become an knee-jerk anti-Barbie person in the Barbieheimer debate, but I keep learning more and more that makes me resentful that Barbie took large auditorium screens from Oppenheimer.
I see people not truly interested in film, but people in love with the idea of playing into a social media fad associated with a film.
Nothing to get into a twist about. Just an observation.

Oppenheimer’s run time being 3 hours will bring their weekly take down.
Barbie’s run time is 90 minutes?
So nearly comparable when comparing daily show times?
ETA: It’s worse than that. Their are 15 showings of Barbie tomorrow at a theater near me to only 3 showings tomorrow for Oppenheimer.

This will backfire gloriously if this movie is as boring as people itt claim their wives and daughters are saying it is. Straight men already don't want to see any future Mattel releases. They can't lose the female audience too.

No. It's just under 2 hours.

I honestly don't believe you. 3 showings in IMAX I would believe. If they have 15 screenings of Barbie, you're talking about a large theater, likely a chain, and no such place would schedule only 3 showings of a movie it cost them a chunk of change to book and exhibit that they also know is going to bring in hardcore Nolan fans in the first weekend. Especially when the movie is available in multiple expensive format options.

Oppenheimer got an A CinemaScore. This will have some strong legs in the weeks ahead

I saw it both but caught Oppenhiemer first. It was a pretty good movie though I wish they just stuck to one aspect ratio! Florence Pugh tittays was quiet nice, did not realized she went topless in other films before when I looked it up. Thought she was an artsy actress, turns out I was wrong! Now her playing Piage from Fighting with our family make sense. Surprised by a lot of guess actor cameoes to be honest. I was no impressed by the nuke bomb, I thought for sure Nolan was gonna use real footage of the nuke from back then.
Kinda really wished he CGI the thing to be honest. The reaction was...tame.
I then caught Barbie with my neices, was pleasantly surprised by the film. To put it in the simplest terms. Barbie to women is like Transformer (2007) for us boys.
I will say this right out, there is no LBGTQRSTUV stuff in the movie at all. The tranny actor was talking out of his arse. Second, the message that they were trying to preach in the movie really made my neices frown. In their words.
"IF we want to be successful, we can't look pretty and have to act and dress like men?"
I lol'd cause I didn't see it that way until they pointed it out. Pretty much in Barbie Land, its a misandrist society where the Kens are there for the barbie's eye candy and enjoyment. The Barbies are the lead and the ken's are subserveant role in the relationship. Every position of power is held by a barbie.
Thats where the margot robbie barbie get shocked by the real world because the roles are reversed.
I think the scene that stood out to me was the scientist barbie scene. To be intelligent she has to wear pants, if shes in a dress she dumber than a rock.
Also a dick is the weakness of barbies cause the moment they saw one, all of the barbies became enslaved by the kens and became airheads.
Oh and they ostracized pregnant barbie aka being a mother is a bad thing.
I know they were trying to make a referendum on the patriarchy but all they did was succeeded in coming off as narrow minded assholes lol!

If this was your biggest takeaway, I don’t know that this movie was for you to begin with. I don’t say that to be rude, but the Trinity test was the focus of about 1/3 of the movie. The rest of it was a biography and character study of Oppenheimer, warts and all.
Some people will love the film, as I did. For others, especially those expecting a patented Nolan mind twist and lots of action - maybe not.

It's looking like this is going to be a pretty historic weekend for the box office. Barbie is tracking with 150+ million at the domestic box office while Oppenheimer is tracking 75+ million. Both films received the coveted 'A' CinemaScore from moviegoers.

I haven't seen Barbie, but a 3 hour biopic dealing with physics and politics getting an "A" on Cinemascore is incredible.
To be clear, I think Cinemascore is a terrible way to judge movies, but I assume this means both movies will have legs.

I suspect MI is going to get a big second weekend boost once everyone else has gotten their round of Oppenheimer/Barbie.

I hope so, it deserves some of this madness. I think Paramount dropped the ball with this release date.
