I mean, he's not really wrong here. Captain America is more about America. He isn't America's hero. He's the world's hero. I mean technically, MCU Cap was blatantly anti-American when he refused to sign the accords and became a wanted fugitive.

All those Marvel movie stars are crazy. Except Chris Pratt.

He's not all the way wrong and I think a lot of what he said is kinda taken out of context. With that said, in the world of social media aggregation and no nuance allowed, this is an insane thing to say a month before your tentpole movie comes out... especially in this current political and social climate where the pendulum is swinging back towards the right.

Captain America shouldn't represent America? What are you even talking about, Anthony? Celebrities are very stupid.

He just can’t help himself. I like the character of Sam, I like the bond that he has with Steve. I like his coming to grips with the burden of carrying the mantle Steve gave him, both because of his obvious physical limitations and what he feels he owes his friend. So hopefully that’s what he meant.

I really hope he just flubbed up what he was trying to convey, I really like him. I'm not excited about a non-serum Falcon America but I do like him as an actor.

I met him at a bar in Atlanta, and he was very much a huge d bag

I met him at a Twin Peaks in Memphis, he bought everyone a round and showed us a few of the fight scene moves by shadowboxing the air.

I posted about this on the Poliboard, but to be fair, I think that TigerMan327 does have a convincing argument on what Mackie may have been trying to say but flubbed it:

quote:
He said this while in Rome trying to promote
The movie.

After saying it’s not about America he then stated it’s about being a good person and having integrity and blahh blahh.

I wonder if he kind of misspoke and was trying to convince foreigners that the movie is for everyone not just Americans?

lol guy in Italy promoting a movie says Captain America isn't all about America, everyone loses their minds.

I've always found it weird when people get worked up over press tour quotes when they are trying to appeal to a specific audience

That doesn't really explain what he said, it just deflects.

My son tried to argue with me about what he "said" versus what he "meant".

He has too many quotes out there that raise eyebrows. Representing a country that doesn't represent him, for example.

"You gotta do better, Senator" wasn't specifically his fault. His job was to deliver the lines.

Evans isn't any better, for that matter.

Yes it does. What part about universal characteristics didn't you get?

What part of “I don’t think America should be one of [Captain America’s] representations” don’t you get?

Because America had slavery like every other country at that time, and even though we were one of the earlier countries to outlaw slavery we should have somehow known better than all of the other countries, some of which still have slavery to this very day. There’s no helping these people.

Mackie's ancestors being slaves in America was possibly the greatest thing that could have happened for him.

Again, this is not what he meant. He hates America because to black people it is a racist country that marginalizes all blacks as they aren’t as successful as whites on average. Why do you think minorities burn the American flag at campus protests so often?

Because victim card and not having personal responsibility for their own situation
