They’ll change that policy a few weeks before Fast 9 next spring.

“With nearly five million rentals, the digital release has in three weeks generated more revenue for Universal than the original Trolls did during its five-month theatrical run," the paper reports, citing a source familiar with the research.

"Its performance has convinced Universal executives that digital releases can be a winning strategy, and may diminish the role of theaters even after the pandemic passes.”

This is the real story. I don't think this will hold true for the big time blockbusters but middle tier movies might be more likely to go straight to VOD.

AMC is the Blockbuster of cinema chains. They’re the only company I really hope goes under during this. They treat their customers and the cinematic experience like shite. In the Northpark theater in Dallas, they charge 15 bucks for a single Bud Light, when the Alamo Drafthouse down the street doesn’t charge that for their most premium beer. They deserve to go under, and I’m glad they’re embracing the stupidity of banning one of the Big 5. Will make it all the more quicker. What a bunch of fricking money grubbing idiots.

If they keep the VOD prices at $20 a pop, I don’t see it taking over. It might work for big kids movies while families are on lockdown, but not for your meat and potatoes movies.

I took this as AMC striking first in what will be a negotiation. If you want to show your film in our theaters when you’re also showing it on VOD, we want to renegotiate how much we get for showing your film.

I’m sure they’ll meet in some sort of middle down the road.

In Katy we probably have too many theaters now, and AMC is fine but there are better options out there. AMC might be the cheapest ticket but not by much.

This. Sure it’s more convenient but we won’t be stuck at home forever

Thank goodness I don't go to the AMC theater here in Baton Rouge.

I was really disappointed to find out that AMC is a Chinese company.

Absolutely false. They were the pioneer of standardizing reclining theater seats in tons of theaters and they have the Dolby theaters. No other theater chain in the country has anything like those. It has ruined me for movie going. If I can’t see it in a Dolby theater I just don’t see the movie.

Just curious why? I may be in the minority but I'd rather watch these new movies at home, even for a premium. It's not really a premium though, it's easily over $20 for my wife and I to go to the movies. If I can stay home and watch it on my big screen with my home theater system, I'm all for it.

I can own the movie itself for $20 by just waiting a few months.

Paying $20 to rent a movie doesn’t make any sense.

Would a movie studio would release a big budget blockbuster on demand for only $20 (once the pandemic is over) ?

AMC is over-estimating its power.

You pay more than that to "rent" the movie when you go to watch it at the movie theater.

AMC has no room to negotiate. The studios are now seeing they can dictate what happens in the theaters after what Disney did to all them with Star Wars.

AMC has no leg to stand on and this will continue their downward slide.

If AMC goes under, will another company fill the void? Even with all its faults (overpriced, people talking, rude assholes playing on their phones) I love going to the theater to see movies.
