I can own the movie itself for $20 by just waiting a few months.
Paying $20 to rent a movie doesn’t make any sense.
I agree and disagree. We have 5 kids and the expense and logistics of going to a theater ends up with us usually waiting for it to come out on DVD. So I have no issue paying 20 to watch and if we like it buy it down the road for another 20. In the end that 40 is less then going once to the movie with the family.

Just curious why? I may be in the minority but I'd rather watch these new movies at home, even for a premium. It's not really a premium though, it's easily over $20 for my wife and I to go to the movies. If I can stay home and watch it on my big screen with my home theater system, I'm all for it.
It was great as we have a large outdoor screen and projector system. Kids love it and if not a movie I am into I can find something else to do.
Also at home can pause the movie for bathroom and food break.

If AMC goes under, will another company fill the void?
Absolutely. It will change nothing in my local market so they can go arse up for all I care.

Yeah, I believe this 0%. The first one made $350 million at the box office, and this one made roughly $92 million. AMC will not be rejecting films from a large studio like this

Well the first one was also a good kids movie and the second one is a giant turd.

No wonder they're almost bankrupt
I hope not, I need to see season 6 of BCS!

Thank goodness I don't go to the AMC theater here in Baton Rouge.
I stick with Old Faithful cinemark in Perkins Rowe.

They'll never do it, but what would be nice is for your A-List/Regal Unlimited type subscription to include at least 1 VOD title a month.

If they keep the VOD prices at $20 a pop, I don’t see it taking over. It might work for big kids movies while families are on lockdown, but not for your meat and potatoes movies.
To take myself, wife, and 1 kid to the theater, tickets plus snacks, is like 50 bucks.
I'll gladly pay 20 to rent and sit at home to watch it and be able to pause for bathroom breaks. Most people I've talked to feel the same way.

And yet, when we talked up The Hunt in here recently, about four of us paid to see it. The other comments were that they weren't paying $20 bucks to see a really good movie at home when they've already paid to see it on Netflix in a few months. I had buyer's remorse, and I loved the movie.
People would pay to see Iron Man IV or Frozen III, but your non-event movies are going to be a hard sell at $20 a pop. Especially after people do the math and realize they could spend $20 on a Disney+/HBO-Max combo and be set for the month.

AMC needs to chill. Universal was trying to make money and help out all the parents quarantined with restless children to give them an activity for two hours. It's not like Universal is trying to upend the entire fabric of the movie going experience.
Sure, VOD could work for some movies, but I for one prefer to see the tentpole franchise movies (Star Wars, Marvel, Fast & Furious etc) on the big screen the first time. AMC needs to read the room and realize every person and business is being affected right now. They're being petulant. Does AMC realize that their theaters not showing Universal movies isn't going to stop people from seeing Universal movies? The audience will just go to another theater.

2018 numbers in US/Canada
8218-AMC
7350-Regal
4544-Cinemark
1683-Cineplex
895-Marcus Theaters
515-Haskins Theaters
499-Southern Theaters
400-B&B Theaters
392-National Amusements
353-Malco Theaters
There is still plenty of theaters without AMC, and if they left the market, others will take their spots.

Didn’t realize there were that many AMC theaters, they only have like 3 in South Carolina.

Absolutely false. They were the pioneer of standardizing reclining theater seats in tons of theaters and they have the Dolby theaters. No other theater chain in the country has anything like those. It has ruined me for movie going. If I can’t see it in a Dolby theater I just don’t see the movie.
Yeah
In my mind AMC is the premiere "big" theater chain - No?

Yeah, I never really went to an AMC until I moved to Nashville. There's one like two miles from my house. Regal, Cinemark, and Georgia Theaters are the ones I remember from living in Georgia and both Carolina's.

Movie theatres are about to become Marvel viewing centers.

I used to feel the same way when they started selling "Bottled Water".
Fandango just purchased VUDU and I think they know what's coming. VUDU is a good product and Home Theater's are only going to get better.
A family of 4 can't go into a typical theater, have average snacks like Popcorn, Soda and maybe a candy for the kids for less than 50.00 bucks unless you catch a matinee, smuggle your food and drink.
20.00 to see a main movie that I can pause, take a piss, get a beverage and not miss a thing in a nice home theater doesn't bother me at all.

20$ rental is a bargain compared with going to theater with kids and buying all the concessions, games, etc
