Well.... frick.

Regal better offer me a rebate or something on my Regal Unlimited account when it resumes, because I didn’t throw down all that money just to get caught up in their dick measuring contest.

This may be just my preference but really like the NCG theaters. Seem to be better run than the AMC’s I’ve been in. The AMC theaters here in Auburn just suck.

This. Well almost. I'll still watch other movies if they're not available in Dolby, but the Dolby experience can't be replicated in a home theater, and it's affordable if you do A-List (and don't have kids).

Cinemark is the other big chain in my area, but nothing beats A-List value, so I'll be disappointed if AMC goes under.

BTW, there's a tiny premium theater chain called ShowPlace ICON that's fantastic—roomiest, most comfortable theater I've ever been in—but A-List is still the way to go for me.

The big problem with all this is the economic framework distributors have been able to get theaters to agree to.

The way it goes is the theater (hereafter referred to as "chain" since most are parts of one now) negotiates with the distributor on what is called the "nut". This is the expenses the chain will incur for presenting the movie.

The chain then negotiates how long the movie will run and how much of a percentage they will get from ticket sales. Generally speaking it often goes something like 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 50%, 75%, 100% (that's a VERY broad brush I just painted with, but it gives a bit of framework to what's going on). This means that usually the longer a movie plays in the theater, the more profits the theater gets.

Distributors DGAF about replays, they only really care about first runs, so back in the day you could always find a theater doing replays for tickets that were a fraction of the cost (and concessions a fraction of the cost as well) and that's why. With the coming of the interwebz and things like Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, etc. those institutions have pretty much dried up.

International ticket prices are usually far lower for a multitude of reasons (laws, chains negotiating as one, etc).

I don't go that far, but I get extremely pissed when AMC puts a Disney cartoon in the Dolby theater while an awesome action movie is premiering in a lesser theater.

The era of the Dollar Cinema was a golden age of film viewing and we didn't realize it.

I did a double feature of Shawshank and Quiz Show for $2. Both were fairly recent releases that hadn't made it to VHS yet. frick I miss that.

You can still do it on an AMC A-List plan, but you'd have to see a dozen movies a month to get the price down. And they never have a dozen decent movies showing in a one month period.

Preach.

I remember my freshman year in college, taking my life into my own hands by riding my bike from NLU over to the Eastgate theater (by that time it had become a dollar-theater) to catch a movie when I was bored. To this day I don't know whether it's more amazing that I wasn't shot/stabbed or that my bike was left undisturbed (I chained it up, but that doesn't always deter a determined criminal).

Absolutely false. They were the pioneer of standardizing reclining theater seats in tons of theaters and they have the Dolby theaters. No other theater chain in the country has anything like those. It has ruined me for movie going. If I can’t see it in a Dolby theater I just don’t see the movie.

They’ve lost their way then. Cinemark is a fine chain that I hope buys them out.

I’d bet Cinemark. Cinemark hasn’t floated the idea of allowing teens to text and talk in theaters. Their theaters are huge and decent, and not charging $15 for a can of Bud Light, doing 10 minutes worth of coke commercials, or annoy you to no end with those red circles. I sat in an AMC theater watching “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and there were 30 minutes worth of commercials. Not the previews, but for coke and candy. I and many others were screaming at the screen about to walk out.

Would a movie studio would release a big budget blockbuster on demand for only $20 (once the pandemic is over) ?

I doubt it. It would probably be more like $100 for a 48 hour rental. If you have a family of 4 or 5, it's already costing that to go to a movie at the theater by the time you figure diner, movie tickets, popcorn, parking. That adds up quickly.

Yeah if you have a family then a 24 hour rental for $60-70 bucks then yeah it’s worth it for them. For a single dude like me? Hell no. I have regal unlimited for a reason.

Sounds like you can't afford to be in Northpark Mall if you are going to complain about beverage prices. Get to Valley View where you belong.

I can afford it, but I go to the Alamo Drafthouse and get a nice beer for $6-7 dollars. Alamo Drafthouse has better drinks, better food (and cheap popcorn that is unlimited) and throws people out for talking. Why in the hell would I go to AMC when I have that, especially when I live within walking distance of one?

I still don't understand how so many people can't go two hours without stuffing their face. I went to the movies almost every weekend with my dad for about 10 years and I can only remember one or two times he got us popcorn.

And yet, when we talked up The Hunt in here recently, about four of us paid to see it. The other comments were that they weren't paying $20 bucks to see a really good movie at home when they've already paid to see it on Netflix in a few months. I had buyer's remorse, and I loved the movie.

You just reminded me to go rent it. Was not disappointed.

The only dig I didn't like was when they shite on the Nasty Girls (National Guard).

This. All of it.

Years ago I went to an iPic in Washington state, they had an employee stationed in the back of each theater to not only refresh drinks when needed but to warn people to stfu and/or stop using their phones inside the theater. You got one warning then you got escorted out.

We still have one here. It was $1 when we started going, and I know it was $1.50 at some point. Might be $2 now. But taking an afternoon to take the kids to see something, getting the $4 popcorn refills and a couple of drinks is still under $20. Two years ago after our third child was born, we would take turns taking the older kids in the afternoons just to get them out of the house. Maybe twice a week.

Trolls wouldn't have done 1/5 of these numbers if parents weren't trapped inside and desperate to do anything to entertain their kids for a brief period.

I can own the movie itself for $20 by just waiting a few months.

Paying $20 to rent a movie doesn’t make any sense.

I can’t remember the last time we went to a movie (wife and I), and it cost less than $20. Then, I always end up thinking I’d pay more to not be around all these people in the theater. I’d gladly pay $20 to be able to watch a big blockbuster at home on release night. The article mentioned Black Widow, and that’s a good example. If our only options are go to the theater now, or wait months for it to hit Disney plus, we are waiting. We just don’t care about that movie enough to go through the trouble of getting a babysitter and going out. But, we would probably pay $20 to watch it at home when it comes out.
