What I was saying is this movie was not at all the story in the book.

I agree. Nothing like the book. No character development, no good interactions among the characters (unlike the book).

Weird subplots about the peace negotiations seemed out of place too.

Visuals were nice, but I was disappointed overall.

Just finished as well. Kind of eh on the story itself, but I thought the cinematography was done really well. Just absolutely brutal. The generals/officers who did these last minute/hour attacks (and I know we had this on the US side) should be shot. Just a complete disregard for human life.

+1 for everything you said.

Imo, it was a character storyline away from being one of the all time great war films. Regardless, very good imo. It had the action 1917 lacked, it just didn’t have its character storyline that got you invested in the individual. I wonder if that’s not potentially part of the point though, none of these boys really survived long enough on average and their lives were wasted with ease.

It's a good movie, just not a good adaptation of the book. As long as you go into it with that understanding you can appreciate it for what it is. There's probably several films that fall into the category of significantly different from the source material but still good in their own right.

But I do think the movie loses some of it's impact following the release of '1917' and 'They Shall Not Grow Old'. We've kind of seen WWI modernized but this film does the best job of driving home the horrors and absurdity of trench warfare. No complaints on focusing on that at the expense of other elements in the novel.

I really enjoyed the film. The cinematography was incredible and I didn’t mind the lack of character development because that was the point of the movie. The characters don’t matter because the foot soldiers themselves didn’t matter. They are just cogs in the machine thrown into a senseless battle.

Enjoyed it but still not as well done as the 1930 classic. All the great shots and cinematography does not overcome the character development in the original. The deaths of Paul and his friends do not hit as hard. The lack of th3 alienation on leave was also missed.

Sure, but that’s not like the book at all. And that’s fine, it doesn’t have to be, but at that point, you’re not making All Quiet on the Western Front you’re just making another WWI movie.

I disagree on the character development, but overall I agree with your assessment. From a visual standpoint the film was far and away better than I expected. Acting was spectacular. Film, I didnt really enjoy. That is probably on me.

How do you leave it out his leave? That is the crucial point of the whole movie

When he determines that he never should have come home to see his dying mother....I don't know how anyone could read that and not feel like their heart was being shredded. That epiphany was such a critical point in the novel.

It was fantastic. Its one of the best war movies I've seen in a long time, right up there with 1917, though I think I liked this one a bit more. Beautiful scenery, fantastic acting, and the war scenes were really well done.

Hell yeah. I've seen people complaining that the protagonist and his friends didn't have a well-developed backstory, but it's already a ~150 min movie and I think I'd prefer the angle they took showing the German politicians/military officials.

I was just fine with the short scenes of their excitement and the propaganda as a backstory. I don't necessarily need to see the soldiers' family and life story to have any additional emotional connection, the film did that well enough to stand on its own with the battle scenes and the in-between conversations.

I'm watching it now. I have it paused right now. It is a German remake version with English Dubs/Subs. It is available on Netflix currently. I really wish it was made in english so I could get the full acting experience of Daniel Bruhl. He's an amazing actor but since it is all dubbed, it just throws you off a little lol. Still a good watch so far.

I LOVE that everyone speaks in their native language.

Same. I turned on the dubs briefly to see how it affected the movie, to each his own but I'm not sure how anyone could watch it that way.

They didn’t need to waste time on the backstory because the actors did a great job of showing they were close friends and you felt the loss when they’d die. Extended backstory just to give weight to a character usually means the actor can’t illicit emotion from the audience and needs help from the writer. It bogs down pacing in a movie like this where pacing added so much to the feeling that these kids were swept away and before they realized the gravity of their decision it was way too late.

I really want to watch this one but I can't watch a 3 hour movie in a different language and stay engaged. I also can't watch a dubbed movie for 3 hours and stay engaged.

I think the subplots spoke more about what and who than anything else, and I enjoyed them very much. The juxtaposition in this movie was amazing. Peace negotiations/the act of war was the most obvious, but there were so many more.

Cinematography was stunning. I quite enjoyed the movie overall. I felt uncomfortable, uneasy. That says a lot when a director can pull that off without doing something shocking.

And there was no better representation than the first few scenes of the film. It was an assembly line, perfected by the industrial revolution. Instead of model T’s, it was young men being marched to their death.

Honestly, the first few scenes were some of my favorites because it did such a fine job setting the pace and mood of the movie.
