Tom Hanks is a good one.
Almost every movie he did starting on was some type of comedy, from 1984 until he did Philadelphia in 1993 and pretty much everythign after that was on the serious side other than Toy Story.
This is a point I thought of awhile back. I watched some 80s flicks, including The Money Pit and Bachelor Party with Hanks. Afterward I found it interesting how different his early career was from even the 90s, and especially since the turn of the century.

Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights. Based on how their careers unfolded, this seems like more of a DiCaprio role. Wahlberg really hasn't done anything like Boogie Nights since
after he got married and ended the white boy rapper persona, he really went back to his catholic roots.
he still makes some pretty hard R movies for sure, but i don't think you'll see him in anything like that again.

I would agree.
Henry Winkler will always be the Fonz. He did nothign to change that.
I think everyone for sure remembers him mainly as this, but as far as the OP's question, I think it fits. Outside of Happy Days, I mainly think of him for Waterboy, which he was pretty much the exact opposite of the Fonz, which was probably on purpose. Then I think of Barry, Arrested Development, Scream, and Parks and Rec. None of those resemble the Fonz much at all. I can't really think of another "cool guy/casanova" role he's played.
Edit: I guess his character in Barry was a bit of a ladies man for an older guy.

I don’t think those guys fit this category, but this is the most annoying way to be obtuse about his answer
Pretty clear no one was going to talk about broadway
As obtuse as assuming that Ferris Bueller was Broderick's first film role? It wasn't even his first lead. The guy was doing a range of roles from Ladyhawke to Max Dugan Returns to WarGames, as well as his character roles before he landed the Ferris role. The guy had a Broadway and film career prior to Ferris.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear about the context of iconic or most known as roles.
Also, someone mentioned typecasting and Winkler is on record stating how they were trying to type cast him as Fonz.

Greg Kinnear from Talk Soup to serious actor.

The Fonz being a cultural icon of the time and suave, charming, and all that goes with it - to the Barry Zuckerkorn’s of the world.

Yes those would all be valid disputes to the topic and again I’m not agreeing that he fits the topic
Bringing up his broadway career doesn’t make sense tho, strange to use that as your point no one on this board is going to be like “oh yeah I know that guy from his early broadway roles”

Is this what you are talkong about?
From skinny little, so country, hick to Mr. Dangerous that every girl secretly wants to be with?
Personally, I know It's possible IRL, but not everyone can pull it off.

I don't think they make much of a secret about it

He is and will always be the Fonz to me. 100% typecast and I can't see past it whenever he would pop up in some movie.
Night Shift would have been much better with someone else in his role as the part was the antithesis of The Fonz.

Not his first role but Ernest Borgnine's acclaimed role as the sensitive romantic lead in Marty sticks out like a sore thumb on his resume.

quote:
Mark Wahlberg dropped a bombshell last month during an appearance at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Speaking with Cardinal Blasé Cupich, Wahlberg mentioned that he somewhat regretted starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights,” saying his role as Dirk Diggler was at the top of his list of poor career choices. Wahlberg’s thoughts went viral in no time, but the actor is here to clear the air somewhat. Speaking to PEOPLE on the “Daddy’s Home 2” red carpet, Wahlberg clarified his comments and explained why he said what he did.
“I was sitting in front of a couple of thousand kids talking about and trying to encourage them to come back to their faith, and I was just saying that I just hope he has a sense of humor because I maybe made some decisions that may not be okay with Him,” Wahlberg said.
In Wahlberg’s original comment, the actor said, “I just always hope that God is a movie fan and also forgiving, because I’ve made some poor choices in my past. ‘Boogie Nights’ is up there at the top of the list.”
The actor says having a family has changed his perspective on the type of movie roles he accepts. Wahlberg doesn’t necessarily regret starring in “Boogie Nights,” which is often cited as his dramatic breakthrough, but he probably would never take on a role like Dirk Diggler now that he’s a father.

Doesn't Walberg do Bible podcasts now?
A far cry from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and Calvin Klein crotch-grabbing tighty whitey ads.

Humphrey Bogart. Was a bad guy.

Matthew Broderick was in his character then just aged poorly, became ugly, lost the charm and the gleam in his eyes and became sad.
Maybe it's because he killed two people and the guilt is weighing him down.
