Actors.

Leonardo DiCaprio
His first major movie people legitimately thought he was mentally disabled.
Leslie Nelson is another. He was a “serious” actor and is probably more known for stuff like The Naked Gun.

I don’t think either of those fit the description you presented
I would agree.
Henry Winkler will always be the Fonz. He did nothign to change that.
Broderick is really only known for his first few films, WarGames and Ferris Bueller. He's been the same Mathew Broderick in just about every film he's in.
Tom Hanks is a good one.
Almost every movie he did starting on was some type of comedy, from 1984 until he did Philadelphia in 1993 and pretty much everythign after that was on the serious side other than Toy Story.
you could say Will Smith as well.
All comedy to start his career, then started doing more serious roles as he got older.

David Caruso in the first Rambo playing an immature, aloof deputy peon. He stayed in the cop roles but became more of a serious cop with a steely glare.
Also… Larry Hagman was a likable, funny soldier on I Dream Of Genie. In Dallas… quite possibly the best tv villain that ever got written.

But wasn’t Hagman more like Major Nelson than J.R. Ewing?

I wonder if Woody Harrelson meets this criteria. When he played Woody in Cheers, he was notoriously and humorously quite dumb.
He’s played lots of comedies since then, and he’s very versatile, and excellent IMO, but when he first hit the big screen, I was surprised. I never thought he would be so good because he played the dumb Woody Boyd in Cheers so well.

No he was a drunk raging lunatic that would cut his own mother over a barrel of oil and bang his brother’s wife at family get togethers.
ETA: there is no evidence to support the above claim.

LH was such a pain in the arse on IDOJ that if it had lasted another season he was going to be fired.
Supposedly Sammy Davis got so aggravated by LH during his guest shot that he walked of the set, & the producer had to beg him to come back.
Then there is the story of LH (an amateur pilot) flying over the studio lot and dropping a certain bodily fluid on the offices below...

I think Matthew. Roderick was relatively consistent in who he was.
Henry Winkler is great but I don’t get strong “role reversal” vibes at all

It’s funny how the paths of Fonzie and Urkel intersect at a certain point as Urkel got gradually cooler and Fonzie got gradually lamer.

Smallville was first. And he's done Titans since then too.

Not a perfect example, but Steve Buscemi in Lonesome Dove.
Weird extra in a western is not something he revisited.

Because I’m watching it now, Olugbenga Enitan Temitope Akinnagbe, Chris Partlow on The Wire.
He was absolutely terrifying as Chris but is a normal even nice and meek dude.
Is that how the topic is applied?
