Henry Winkler - The Fonz of course is how he was known initially. He's now IMO one of the best character actors ever. (Character actors was in my mind when I started thinking this).
very confusing. no one knows him as anything but the fonze. he was character acting as the fonze. you seem to be asking what actors didnt become type cast in their initial role.

David Caruso in the first Rambo playing an immature, aloof deputy peon. He stayed in the cop roles but became more of a serious cop with a steely glare. Also… Larry Hagman was a likable, funny soldier on I Dream Of Genie. In Dallas… quite possibly the best tv villain that ever got written.

Perfect examples.

Supposedly Sammy Davis got so aggravated by LH during his guest shot that he walked of the set, & the producer had to beg him to come back. Then there is the story of LH (an amateur pilot) flying over the studio lot and dropping a certain bodily fluid on the offices below...

What??

I’ve always read that Hagman was a funny, goofy, larger than life type person offset.

Maybe he cleaned up his act by the time of Dallas

On IDOJ he was considered a pain in the arse - this from creator-producer Sidney Sheldon (who told the Sammy story)

As I said, if it had been renewed for a 6th season he would have been replaced

Those weren’t Winkler and Broderick’s first roles. Winkler started as a character actor and Broderick was a young star on Broadway.

Eddie Murphy was the edgiest comedian in the world with SNL, Trading Places, BH Cop and Coming to America to start his career - now he does non funny PG family crap.

I also never saw brat packer Robert Downey Jr cleaning up and becoming Iron Man

And Liam Neeson - Rob Roy - Darkman -Schindler- now a 70yr old Action Star. Amazing .

Kevin Costners early movies were basically soft porn.

Maybe not a great source.

Keanu Reeves as Ted Logan was a pretty far cry from John Wick.

Morgan Freeman (in his breakout role, not his first role) as the violent pimp in Street Smart.

I had never heard of him before that movie, although I realized later I had unknowingly watched him on Electric Company tv show.

Matthew Broderick was in his character then just aged poorly, became ugly, lost the charm and the gleam in his eyes and became sad.

Keanu had a handful of serious roles before Bill and Ted that got him a little bit of notice.

And he did go back to Bill and Ted in 2020.

Irene Dunne was a leading lady and sex symbol in the 30-40’s.
More famous as Granny in the Beverly Hillbillies.

Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights. Based on how their careers unfolded, this seems like more of a DiCaprio role. Wahlberg really hasn't done anything like Boogie Nights since

Depends on your generation. I never knew what the fonz was until recenelt. But I always knew Henry winkler as a very common and distinct character actor in tons of movies and tv shows growing up.

I don’t think those guys fit this category, but this is the most annoying way to be obtuse about his answer

Pretty clear no one was going to talk about broadway
