It depends. If I am just looking to get across how cool of a spectacle movies can be, then I'm showing them:

On the other hand, if I'm trying to get them to see film as art, then I'm showing them

nah, OP was talking about getting them started and into cinema.

Film as Art is a later step. Pushing artsy movies too early will bore and turn them off.

My 3, to a newcomer (as stated maybe your child):
1) Raiders of the Lost Ark (The Mummy is a good alternative)
2) Star Wars (original, in original/despecialized format)- just a rollicking good time
3) The Princess Bride- plenty of adventure, and it's also funny as hell. I would love to watch that with someone who's never seen it.

That's a perfect choice.

The reason I picked Cinema Paradiso is because it's about a kid obsessed with and falling in love with movies... And how they changed his life.

But, it is foreign. So maybe a hard sell.

I dunno, those are both pretty damn intense. I'd say the person would have to be interested in, or at least open to, the topics at a mature level.

Pre-teen me was able to watch The Exorcist, around 10 or 11, back in the late 70's. Yes, it stuck with me. Gave me nightmares for years afterwards. I still think it's a great movie, but you have to be ready for it.

Same thing to an extent is in play with Saving Private Ryan. I was older and it didn't bug me, but you can't just take a 10 yr old used to kid shows, and toss them into the opening sequence, or the final battle as Upham cowers in fear while his buddy slowly gets stabbed with the bayonet.

I wouldn't use either as an introduction.

Say you were trying to get your kid, spouse or friends into movies. They give you 3 movies to show them how enjoyable the movie experience can be.

What are the 3 that you would show them and why?

Well first of all, I would tell them this isn’t the fricking Olympics, and that on the fricking MTVBoard we do Mount Rushmores so they’re going to watch four fricking movies and they’re going to fricking like it

1) Raiders of the Lost Ark - widely recognized as the perfectly structured screenplay, it is the quintessential Spielberg masterpiece that will train them on how storytelling through film works, with visuals that will blow their minds and one of the most charismatic actor/characters ever to grace the big screen.

2) Terminator 2: Judgement Day - another master class from Cameron on how to deliver that perfect structure, with even more action, revolutionary special effects, and the screen presence of another of the biggest movie stars of all time to take the cinematic experience to the next level.

3) Jurassic Park - just when they think they’ve seen all that the magic of movies can deliver, it’s time to see what every child has imagined come to startling life

4) Interstellar - the final frontier for any journey through the wonders of cinema has to be outer space. Having seen the past, present, and future of this planet projected onto the silver screen, it’s time to go beyond our world and travel among the stars and into the heavens

Not only are all of these visual marvels, which is the key to any master class of cinema imo, they are all great stories, filmed by three of the best directors of all time, featuring many of the greatest movie stars ever to grace the screen.

They also feature the added dimension of undeniably brilliant scores that are essential to being transported to another time and place to truly create the magic of the cinema.

They are epic journeys that capture the imagination and are filled with action, fun, humor, and heart.

Not sure how anyone could sit through these and not be hooked on the thrill of the cinematic experience.

I don't really care to go to the theater for the most part.

Saying that, I'd love to see The Good the Bad and The Ugly on the big screen just for the visuals. That movie is art.

Since you said Spouse, kid, or friend I think some choices could be different depending on who the viewer is.

I think Raiders is a perfect choice regardless of the viewer. Jurassic Park falls in this category also.

If I wanted to introduce my wife to comedy I’m probably picking something with heart also like Planes Trains and Automobiles or The Burbs.

For my friend or Son I would probably go with something like Airplane.

Horror/Thriller I’m going with Hitchcock’s Psycho.

For pure visuals Interstellar is a must.

Other movies that I know are pretty much universally loved by men and women are Tombstone, Shawshank, and Die Hard.

I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy as does my son and friend but my wife could give two shits about it. It’s kind of frustrating because she likes several other things in the fantasy genre.

Interstellar.- Visually stunning but more than anything the sound and music captures you.

Independence Day- the definition of a summer blockbuster

Saving Private Ryan- one of the best war movies.

Knowing my audience a bit, I would go in order

Rocky
Dances With Wolves
Braveheart

I think they would want to see more after that. So, Rocky II, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and finish with humor, The Wolf of Wall Street, would be their homework.

Despite what people thought of it as a movie on here, the first Avatar was breathtaking on the big screen.

Especially when you consider tech at that time. It was amazing.

This thread has made me want to watch Interstellar again.

"Saving Private Ryan" the opening action scene of the storming of the beach on D-Day alone is worth the price of admission.

"Psycho" One of the best suspense movies by Hitchcock, and he made a lot of them.

"Gladiator" The storyline, the action sequences, the great acting by an all-star cast all add up to a great movie. Same for "Braveheart" with the added bonus of a great soundtrack.

Jaws has to be one of the three. I didn’t see it anywhere on page 1

Jurassic Park

Avatar (3D)

-Avatar is obviously the most controversial. It’s not a great movie. But the 3D used in that movie was truly revolutionary. Before that movie, 3D was just a gimmick with stupid shite jumping out at you randomly with some stupid red and blue glasses

Good answers. I’d throw in it’s a Wonderful Life and Philadelphia Story to balance out non action or Scifi. Jaws would be in there.
