episode 4 made mention of passing through the territories which I took to mean Arizona and New Mexico territory
1) They have to cross through Oklahoma, which didn't become a state until 1907 and was all Indian territory at that point, so they could have been referring to that and having to survive any hostile Indians as they passed through the lands granted to various tribes.
2) The Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho were still territories in 1883, as they didn't gain statehood until 1889 and 1890.
My guess is they are going to go up through the Texas Panhandle, cross through Oklahoma, then head north over the prairie of western Kansas/eastern Colorado. If they do that, they can intersect the Oregon trail in western Nebraska around Scotts Bluff.
From there they go across southern Wyoming, southern Idaho, and into Oregon that way.

I'd bet its a combination of both. Through Oklahoma to the Nebraska/Dakota/Washington Territories.

It does make more sense with the constant discussion about the harsh winter they are about to experience!

I thought this was the first really bad episode
It was slow, and accomplished nothing. They could have put this entire episode into 10 minutes really

While not my favorite episode, I thought they did a great job showing how dangerous it was crossing some of the rivers During Westward Expansion.
My 6th Great Grandfather actually died attempting to cross the Ohio River back in 1785.

The entire last two episodes have been about the river. Not sure why that was needed

quote:I was confused about this yesterday also so I rewatched that part of episode 3. When they were arguing about East vs West I don’t even think they were talking about crossing the same river since Shea mentioned the ferry at Denison (which is North of Dallas?) and then said they would have to cross the Brazos if they go West (while standing on a riverbank).

James said they have to go West at some point and it might as well be there. I think the argument was over which route to take through/around Oklahoma on the way North. If they were taking the extreme Southwest/California route it seems like this wouldn’t have even been up for debate.

They could be going directly northwest by Amarillo and then go through the Raton Pass in NE New Mexico, don't even touch OK going that way. Is one of the most common way folks take theses days, too.

If they came from Tennessee, the traditional route would've been to go to St. Louis and follow the Oregon trail from there. This show is poorly written like Yellowstone. Seems the writers just like to incorporate Texas for self-righteous reasons.

You are not going north to Kansas from Texas, to get to Oregon. That would leave you crossing the Rockies at it’s most widest part. You go south of the Rockies (New Nexico, Arizona), basically, the future Route 66 or I-10. You can’t go north to the Dakotas and then cross west, because the winter will kill 1/2 the people.
That makes sense but the Dutton family ended up in Montana. I don’t think they would have done that without going North first.

Thought it was funny someone had a piano in their wagon.

Keep in mind, that throughout the start of this show, James Dutton has made the point that he does not have a final destination in mind. He is looking for the "perfect" place to homestead.
He wasn't setting out for Oregon. He obviously sent the women on the train as far west as he could for their ease. Then he teamed up with the Wagon train for "safety in numbers" from bandits and Indians on the trip.
At some point, the Duttons will break off the Wagon Train and keep north to Montana as the wagon train probably hits the Oregon Trail.

I kinda thought they were following the Goodnight-Loving trail like Woodrow and Gus took.

Feels like half the train has died so far

Where would you all rate this show from 0 to 10? Thinking about starting

For those arguing about the route they are taking…

Yeah it’s gotten pretty bogged down.

I found myself annoyed by the length of the piano song. A lot of inconsistencies in that river too. Some folks wading across and walking out while others flounder over their heads.
Agreed. It was too choppy, hard to tell exactly what was happening, and I found myself thinking that it didn't even look all that deep, or the current very strong, and they were acting as if they were trying to cross the Colorado after a heavy rain or snowmelt.

But there aren't any routes that go through Ft. Worth on that map. I guess you could argue that they are going north to the Santa Fe but not sure that would make any sense either.
It would make sense for them to be heading northwest to hit the Oregon, going through Colorado, but it would take a long while to get there.
