Almost all of them, from Democrats like Maria Cantwell to Republicans like Ted Cruz, from bill supporters like Chris Coons to bill opposers like Cory Booker, mentioned to the thousands watching on CSPAN and the dozens within the chamber a festering issue that's gripped the industry: the millions that universities spend on firing college football coaches.

"In 2025 alone, 15 fired coaches secured buyouts worth a quarter of a billion dollars," said Booker, who filed an amendment (it failed) to cap coaching buyouts to an amount no greater than one year's salary.

"Two-hundred and fifty-million dollars paid to coaches not to coach," he continued. "And you hear people running around here lobbying saying we have a financial crisis in college sports!"

As the college coaching firing cycle creeps closer — it could start at any minute! — buyouts owed to coaches may again climb toward record figures.

quote:

Lincoln Riley, USC

Buyout: around $60 million

Many around the industry assumed that Riley entered this season needing a trip to the playoffs. But after a lowly performance at Rutgers and a loss at home to Oregon — which played the second half without star QB Dante Moore — a playoff berth doesn't look likely. The schedule is loaded. They host Ohio State on Halloween and travel to defending national champion Indiana. Road games against Penn State, Wisconsin and UCLA loom as problems, too. The buyout may be high, but it's unlikely to stop a decision from AD Jen Cohen, whose frustrations must be high given the resources poured into the program. Would Cohen, the former AD at Washington, go knock on Kalen DeBoer's door?

quote:

Shane Beamer, South Carolina

Buyout: $22-24 million

The Gamecocks may be headed toward a third losing season in the last four years. The blowout loss at Alabama and the drama that ensued involving standout edge rusher Dylan Stewart doesn't help the cause of Beamer, who is three games above .500 in his sixth season in Columbia, South Carolina. Is the job one in which a championship should be expected every year? No. But even in the new roster-spending era of the sport, the Gamecocks expect to, at the very least, stay out of the SEC basement. And while they may not be spending top-10 money, they are doling out enough to guys like Stewart and QB LaNorris Sellers, whose decline has left fans aghast.

quote:

Mike Norvell, Florida State

Buyout: $45-50 million

The firing of your boss, in this case athletic director Mike Alford, normally doesn't bode well for many coaches. But was Alford's firing a product of university administrators' pinning the football issues on the AD? Is Norvell out of the woods? Unlikely. But some at FSU believe that the coach can still survive by winning enough this year (can he get to seven Ws?). The buyout figure is high enough to present a problem for a department that spent hundreds of millions on facility renovations recently.

quote:

Bill Belichick, North Carolina

Buyout: $10-12 million

No, the win in Dublin over TCU didn't quiet the buzz around Belichick's tenure in Chapel Hill, especially after blowing a fourth-quarter lead at Clemson. Notre Dame is on deck this Saturday and it could get ugly. Sure, it's only his second year, but the results don't bode well for the future — on and off the field. General manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, Bill's son, both resigned amid investigations into, let's just call it, not great stuff. Entering his second year, athletic director Steve Newmark wants to see improvement and progress from Year 1. Can the Tar Heels show it against the Irish?

I am pretty sure the average 14-year old who has watched football could come up with that list. Nothing shocking or surprising.

Coaches make rediculous money even for not coaching. I went into the wrong profession. Money falls out of these AD's and schools pockets.

I think we can safely move Norvell from the hot seat to dead man walking category of coaching searches.

What percentage of these buyouts are paid by boosters?

Dumbass Booker is acting like LSU or Penn State or whoever is writing the coaches a check with funds taken directly from the pockets of taxpayers

The virtue signaling from politicians and fans alike that "coaches make too much money" is a dumb argument. They make what the market dictates. No one is forcing a school to hire a HC for any amount of money. But when the college football marketplace is huge (for example, SEC schools get ~$75M annually from JUST the TV contract...which is largely driven by football), paying the CEO of your hundred-million-dollar business is not outrageous.

No, money falls out of the wealthy donors' pockets. They are the ones paying the bulk of the salary. Not the "schools". And if they, collectively, want to pay a guy $10M+ per year to coach their favorite football team then that is just simple supply and demand. The demand of donors and fans who want a championship team is high. The supply of coaches who donors and fans feel are capable of delivering such is low.

What should be the discussion is how congressmen whose annal salary is approximately $200k have net income/wealth in the tens of millions when the ONLY thing they have to "sell" is their vote/influence on laws and issues affecting every American citizen.

My dream job is to be a fired college football coach. Paying me a brinks truck cause I sucked so bad is a pretty good gig.

Of course it failed. It’s illegal and would be struck down by the courts eventually had it actually passed. Which it had no chance of doing. Grandstanding bastard.

I’m certainly not in favor of congress being involved in this, but the coaching market has gone off the rails. How in the frick did we get to where we are paying guys $50-$60 million to not coach? If they’re winning, they’re worth every bit of $10+ million a year, but I have no idea how schools and athletic departments have gotten taken to the woodshed so bad by these agents.

And now where there are seemingly no real standout coaches like a Saban or Meyer, why on earth would you give these guys so much guaranteed money?

Because if you don’t, somebody else will.

And I know he was paid well, but Saban was probably the most underpaid coach in the history of college football at Bama.

And they’ll almost certainly be on the hook for a huge buyout and you won’t, which is kind of my point.

Can we name a single coach that should have what is essentially a guaranteed contract? I can’t.

Markets change, that’s kind of my point

How is Fickell not on this list? His buyout is $21MM during the season and $19MM after it. We can't afford that buyout.

Also, why would Congress get involved?

Those buyouts aren't being paid with taxpayer money. As with most things, the market will take care of this problem by itself. We get enough big name flameouts and massive buyouts having to be paid and they'll stop getting such big buyouts in their contracts. The money will dry up and it won't be worth it.

its private money......universities should better protect themselves but still not an issue congress should be dictating to them. If he gets his amendment this bill has 0 shot at going through.

anyway, I figured the Lincoln Riley hire would disappoint relative to expectations but at a certain point USC should probably stop the endless churn and burn of coaches since Pete and realize it's a them issue.
