He was yellow carded and punished for that.

In basketball, he would be shooting his 17th free throw of the night

That 1980 Team USA had a bunch of college kids, most of whom never made an NHL roster. The USSR was the best team in the world. They trounced NHL all-star teams.

Nothing like that will ever happen again simply because these tournaments aren't set up like that anymore. The dynamics that made that happen are just gone forever.

USA Hockey won Gold this winter and it was a big deal. But that team was stacked with high end NHL talent, some of the best players in the world.

Team USA soccer has guys on it that play high level soccer on some of the best leagues on the world. It's not shocking they could put something together and go on a run and win it all.

But yes, the amount of shite talking America would do to the rest of the world would make them all melt. We agree on that.

Apologies, idk why but I was thinking about Olympic basketball Gold when you commented. Yes the hockey win was huge, I wasn’t alive for it. I would say it would be up there with that, a massive country win.

I would say soccer would be pretty close because we are historically pretty garbage at the sport.

Hockey has the same scoring methodology.

But it's also faster action, and we have the world's top league whereas the US pro soccer leagues are third rate.

I’m no big fan of soccer, but you’ve been conditioned to think that way.

Simply put, most Americans don’t recognize or appreciate ball movement and positioning the way it happens in soccer.

After watching a whole lot of matches with a lot of Brazilians, what I came to realize is they’re conditioned to think that any play of the ball towards the goal is going to go in. So they get excited even if it’s 10 feet off the mark.

The closest thing I can compare it to is how many Americans feel that any long fly ball in baseball is going to be a home run.

there would also have been a reveiw in the NBA and the foul also would have been rescinded if the team challenged it?

If the team challenged it. This was done specifically by the refs. No challenge needed.

Would be a 5 minute review in the NBA, if they even catch it.

Because that’s the way you perceive it. Probably over half the plays in a football game go for four yards or less. You think that’s exciting to a neutral observer? They see it as “well, nothing happened there”. The same way you do if there’s an attack with no shot on goal or goal. But, in reality, a lot happened on both plays if you really pay attention and know what you’re watching.

Hockey has infinitely more action than soccer and it still barely registers in the US compared to other sports, soccer has a long way to go. Even though for all of my 50-ish years it’s supposed to have been the most popular sport in the next couple of years.

and i guess i fail to see how that makes it any less true that the NBA absolutely has a mechanism for incorrect foul calls to be overturned

US pro soccer leagues will always lag behind European leagues since they can't participate in Champion's League.

IMO, soccer is considered "foreign" in the United States and until we have a transcendent superstar the likes of a Michael Jordan or Tom Brady the general American populace will not embrace soccer. I was amongst this group of people until my son started playing and I made a concerted effort to understand the game. College Football is still my first love but soccer perfectly (especially EPL) complements football viewing in the Fall.

I watch soccer every 4 years during the World Cup, so I don't have a big knowledge of the game. I will say that last nights game US vs. Paraguay was a fun game to watch. It seemed like there was way more attacking than games I've seen in the past. I am correct on that or is it my imagination?
