I’ll have to go with the Washington Nationals. Getting hot at the right time has always been a big part of winning the World Series, at least in my lifetime, but this is the most extreme example of a mostly mediocre team catching fire.
They started out 19-31 and finished 93-69. That was a very, very, very good team and they were stacked.
2006 Cardinals is the correct answer.

Applies to any sport in 2020

That Nats team was stacked with individual talent. The 06 Cardinals are the answer

What
99-63 regular season record and 11-1 postseason record.
In the regular season their top 4 in the rotation had ERA+s of 144, 116, 128, 125. All 4 pitched 200+ innings. And their pitching in the postseason was good too.

Ok. But look at what they did the 25 years prior and what they have done since
But that has exactly jack shite to do with the Royals teams that won.

and what a relief 2006 was after so many shortcomings after a key player or two went down before October play most notably 1985 and 1987.

The 2020 Dodgers were not true champions
After that, I’d go with the Washington Nationals who were an absolute joke and I’m still amazed how the Astros blew that one

The Nats won 93 games that year, dumbass

The Astros when a trash can was their MVP.

Edmonds and Eckstein were really the only regulars that missed significant time. Pujols missed 3 weeks in June, but quickly returned to MVP form. And Edmonds' production had slipped even before he got hurt. The team was 58-47 at the start of August, so they weren't that impressive before the injuries hit. And the #3-5 starters were awful all year. And that had nothing to do with injuries.

Using this standard that makes the 2009 Saints the worst Super Bowl champion
Made the NFCCG in 2006, were respectable but not great the next two years.
Hovered around .500 the few years before Katrina and had the Dome Patrol in the late 80s/early 90s.
We're a contender most of the remaining years of the Brees era.
The 02 Bucs and 99 Rams were, much worse before and after.

2006 Cardinals. End of discussion.
I guess it depends on how you define worst team, if it’s W/L record then probably they were just a handful of games over .500 but won a poor division. But that team was plagued with injuries throughout the year and got healthy late. Pujols and Rolen missed some time but Edmonds, Molina, Wainright, and Mulder all missed significant time. But they got healthy at the right time.

This has a whole “College Football Committee” feel to it.

Where does this idea that the '19 Nats were a "joke" come from? Because they were a wild card? They had Scherzer, Strasburg, and Corbin leading the rotation when they were all still studs, and they had Juan Soto, Ant Rendon, and Trea Turner anchoring the lineup. That team got off to a slow start and had some bullpen issues in the regular season, but they were mega talented and were a 95 win pythag team.

The Dodgers fake 2020 “championship” by far.
That was basically like winning a preseason tournament.

Like I already stated, Edmonds and Eckstein were really the only regulars that missed a lot of time. And Edmonds had fallen off even before he got hurt crashing into the wall. Even when Mulder pitched, he was progressively worse as the season wore on. Rolen and Pujols missed a few games, but both had over 500 AB's. Molina and Wainwright were healthy all year. The division was so bad they should have been able to win more than 83 games, injuries or not.
