I think he just got those stats cause he played 40 years.

Not much respect being shown for a guy who played that long as a starter at a normally short-lived position in the NFL.

This is why I end up scratching my head when it comes to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and their selection of skill position players.

Using the metrics the voters typically go with to pick running backs, there is absolutely no excuse for Alexander to have not been inducted into Canton by now.

Terrell Davis voting created a precedent they can't ignore.

Be talked about as the dominant RB for a few years and you're in.

Granted Henry has to fricking win something in the NFL like TD if his career is cut short.

Someone try and explain Barry Sanders and Gale Sayers?

Normal trajectory means he going to fall off the cliff soon. If he does his career will look at lot like Shaun Alexander's, who was great for a few years but can't get in the HOF.

If any RB is built for longevity, it’s DH. He’s 29, I could see him still being pretty damn good until 35.

Has the BEST RB of his era ever had trouble getting in?

That's the key metric imo.

Jim Brown - OJ Simpson - Walter Peyton - Eric Dickerson - Barry Sanders - Emmit Smith - LaDanian Tomlinson, etc...

We can debate the runner-ups, the wildcards and the compilers but the pick of the litter - THE guy; the one on the bedroom posters and the top of the fantasy draft charts - he always gets in.

For better or worse, Henry is the top dog of his era. All he needs to do is finish his career without some horrible incident on or off the field.

Potentially. Besides Chris Johnson, every body in the 2k club is in the HOF.

But to be safe, he probably needs to get to 10000 yards and 100 touchdowns to solidify his HOF case.

Alexander should be in the HOF and so should Henry IMO

Both were the backbone of their teams and individually exceptional

Shaun Alexander should have absolutely been in the HOF by now. But I feel like he's getting hosed because of how fast his career ended.

He was the best RB in the game one year, breaking the touchdown record. Then 3 seasons later he was out of the league.

Wasn't just the best running back in the league. Shaun was the MVP of the NFL.

Production wise he will make it in. But you can write the history of this Era without mentioning him because his team did nothing.

Henry will never sniff that unless he pulls off like three more 2000 yard season.

He needs 4 2000 yard seasons (something no player has done twice) just to be considered top 10? And you question other people’s seriousness?

They did extend the season though

Doesn't work that way. From Jim Brown to Gale Sayers, to OJ to Barry Sanders to anyone below these guys, nobody cares. We all just think about the way they played. You are badly mistaken when it comes to any great player, on any team.

The Titans didn't win a Super Bowl but I wouldn't say they did nothing.

They had a winning record every year during his first six seasons and made the playoffs four times including a trip to the AFCCG. And Henry was a big part of that; take him away and those teams did nothing. Last year they started 7-3 before falling apart.

Henry has 732 rushing yards in the playoffs, the most of any active RB and 17th all-time behind mostly HOFers. He could move into the top 10 with another playoff run or two before his career winds down. That's not nothing. It's just another casualty of the Super Bowl or bust mentality that has taken over NFL fandom.

I’m not disrespecting Gore, he had a very good career but watching him did you ever think that’s a HOF running back? It certainly is amazing he played as long as he did, but does that mean you’re one of the best running backs of all time? Longevity?

You have to have some sort of flair, pop, set records, game changing skill imo. I believe he’s going to get in based on 16k yards and the voters won’t ignore that yardage. Just for me, he wasn’t a HOF RB.

Frank Gore playing 16 seasons as a RB in the NFL is as impressive as any stat you'll find. He did something that no one else really was able to do.

You can do a Top 50 moments of the last 5 years, or Top 100 of the last 10 years, and not have to include the Titans. That should tell you everything about their achievement level.

That said, Henry is probably in; he's not completely disappeared, and piled up 2,400 important yards and 23 touchdowns the last two seasons; if he can do that two more times, it'll put him safely over the 10K/100TD club, and it'll be hard to keep him out permanently.

The simple version is this: people who saw Barry or Gale play in person will retell the story to their grandchildren. People who see Derek Henry in person will shrug and say 'Really good back', and move on.
