A lot of the hispanic and asian players do speak enough english to converse in the clubhouse, but most don't do it in the media because their words can easily be taken out of context if they say something wrong.

Also, Asians are particularly concerned about their accent. Not just words being misunderstood or misinterpreted, but also fearful of being ridiculed for their pronunciation of certain words, syllables, or letters.

Speaking English well enough to communicate one on one or in small groups isn’t the same as speaking to reporters or in front of a camera.

Maybe dude just wants to play ball

Also, he knows some English, just isn’t very fluent yet.

It’s not a sign of disrespect. Perhaps he also values his fans back in Japan and prefers to answer in a way that they understand, knowing that he has an English translator for the fans here.

I see all 3 of your points and agree completely but I still raise you my point of him missing out a HUGE amount of branding opportunities.

Go watch some videos of Trevor Bauer in Japan - there's no way I'd be trying to learn Japanese if I were him. Everything is so completely different. It's overwhelming. I'm sure people from Japan feel the same about English. Cut the guy some slack. He's already dealing with massive culture shock here in the US.

If it bothers you sp much, no one is stopping you to learn Japanese. See how well you can pick it up.

The other night I saw him having a lengthy conversation on the bench with Taylor Ward. Either Taylor Ward speaks fluent Japanese, or Ohtani knows English but doesn’t want to get burned by our dumbass media for saying something harmless they will take out of context

When you are at the pinnacle of the game as he is, the amount of scrutiny and pressure placed upon you is tremendous.

Not using English, even if he speaks fluently, without an accent, allows him to add another buffer between him and accessibility. Baseball seems to be what matters to him, not feeding a circus around him-- he can and should just shrug and smile, and keep the jackals who are waiting to pounce on any ambivalence in anything he says at arm's length.

Don't follow MLB. Loved baseball back in the 80s and just lost interest. I have been getting introduced to this guy through some youtube shorts. Dude is pretty dang impressive.

So is his deal is that he's a damn good pitcher and leading (or close to the lead) in HRs? Unbelieveable...

Are there other things pushing his popularity? I mean the pitching and hitting is enough it seems. Just checking if there are other things I don't know about this dude.

He's about to sign a contract worth more than half a billion dollars. I think he'll be just fine.

Whats worse is guys like Bartolo Colon or Vlad Guerrero who played in the USA over 20 years and still don't speak English.

The #1 worst is Vlad Guerrero Jr.

Why not learn the language so you can relate to more branding opportunities and relate to the people and kids who are your biggest fans.

Have you ever tried to learn another language? It’s not easy, and English is one of the hardest to learn.

I just came here to point out that for a sport without “diversity” there sure are a lot of people with varying skin colors speaking a wide variety of languages!
It’s the most diverse sport in the world outside of soccer

Because this guy is possibly in a position to be considered the best baseball player of all time.

Him being the best player in the world is irrelevant. Baseball isn’t just an American game anymore, and the notion that he HAS to learn English to play the sport is ridiculous.

To the Country that is paying him money. Or just for Funzies

He doesn't get paid to speak English. He gets paid to strike people out and hit homeruns.
