Ichiro and Ohtani both 'know' English but not enough to be fluent, words can me misinterpreted, etc.
It's not a respect thing, I assume everything these guys do have respectful intentions.
If he spoke in the most broken English, trolls would be on him with the quickness.
He's giving them nothing to go on.

Remember listening to an interview with a Spanish speaking player back in the 90s. He basically admitted that he can speak English fluently, but used an interpreter as a filter to make sure he doesn't say anything he shouldn't. He then blamed the interviewer for making him feel the need to use an interpreter. Don't recall who the player was, and if it was directed at that interviewer or all reporters/journalists.
Basically, to your first 2 points, it takes away the gotcha moments the media loves to try to trip players into when they talk fluidly or in a highly emotional moment.

Americans don’t even speak English so there goes your dumb argument right there

Why not learn the language
I guarantee you he already knows how to speak English.
People from Japan and South Korea take English classes starting in elementary school.
I have been to South Korea eight times and made some pretty good friends over time. I asked why people there pretend not to know how to speak English and was given a simple answer by multiple acquaintances.
They don't want to make a mistake and embarrass themselves.

As long as the dude isn't Anti-American, I don't care what language he speaks.
