Dammit we have one recognized, the rest yes probably bogus but 1960 is ours.

LSU is the only game in the state. Ole Miss and MSU have to share talent in a small state

As always it's State's fault

1. They have 2/3 the population of Louisiana and two BCS schools to Louisiana's one.
2. Mississippi is the blackest state in the union and one of its two major schools had Johnny Reb for a mascot up til a couple years ago.
3. Said black athletes might not want to go to school in Starkville either.
4. Ditto for the white athletes.

They have the smallest population of any southern state by a wide margin. Their largest city is barely more than half the size of Baton Rouge.
Also, having 2 SEC schools means they split their star athletes into two schools when they only have the population to support one major program. Due to being surrounded by better rivals, they can't raid neighboring states for recruits as effectively. If Mississippi was more like Arkansas and had only one school in a BCS conference, that one school would be far more successful than either Ole Miss or State.

b/c most of the people with promise and talent have the brains to leave

Wait are we counting Arkansas as a northern state?

It starts when they are young here. Emphasis placed on church and religion. In some areas no sports on Wednesdays or Sundays. Hell there is a ballpark up here that won't allow the kids to practice on the ball fields once the season starts. Things are arse backwards.

Hell, even Nutt did a good job of getting top tier MS guys. Mullen does a decent enough job as well to where there are only 1-2 elite players who leave the state now.
it doesn't matter who the coaches are in MS when Saban and Miles are next door...

Mississippi kids don't leave the state at a rate higher than say Arkansas or Alabama or Georgia kids decide to go to another SEC program.
And the talent they have per capita is actually pretty awesome... their problem is just they have a relatively small population and neither MSU nor Ole Miss has hired a coach capable of transforming their respective programs.

Miles has only had 2-3 recruits from MS since 2009. Same for Saban.

THIS
The only Mississippi native on LSU's team is Dickson.
Bama has an OL and TE
None were even top 5 in MS in their respective sr years.
Most talent has been staying in Mississippi.

Mississippi has three major universities that kind of split the talent. LSU, Arkansas and Tennessee and larger populated states don't have that problem.
I think this has to be one of the biggest reasons. You are spreading a limited talent base thin. While Louisiana if fortunate to have a LOT of good athletes, if it had a top 3 like Mississippi does, the teams would be good, but not LSU-like dominant.
Look at what LSU was like in football when it had to fight to keep it's players in state in the 80s and 90s.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State have 0 national championships
That does not mean the state is bad athletically. That is a terrible standard and again shows everything that is wrong with our sports culture.

Well LSU can thank Huey Long for us having no in-state competition for talent.
