re: Why don’t major leaguers hustle through first at full speed?

Damn, hadn't seen the video but that looked like some slow pitch softball mixed beer league effort there

Your teammates would probably rip you in the locker room if you sprinted to first every time. NBA players probably rip guys for diving on the court for a loose ball during the regular season.
All about the unions…
Can’t make your fellow union members look bad or risk injuring them unnecessarily

From time to time superstars will get promoted and do it early in their careers because it’s how they’ve always played and their teams have put a stop to it quickly.
They want these guys playing 162 times a year every year. Injury risk is not worth the reward.
On tappers back to the pitcher or grounders right at a guy you are out 99+ times out of 100 at that level no matter how hard you run.

Astros after seeing 2 batters in a row basically jog. Kids look up to these players.
Altuve went on the DL a year or two ago from going flat out and tweaked a groin or hammy. He spent about a month on the shelf.

Joe DiMaggio
When asked why he hustled on plays that had little effect on a game's outcome or on his team's standing, Joe replied, “Because there's always some kid who may be seeing me for the first time. I owe him my best.”
George Brett
"I want to hit a routine ground ball to second base, bust my butt down the line, and get thrown out by a step, so young players will see it and say 'that's how you play this game." - George Brett, when asked if he'd like to hit a home run in the final at bat of his career.

I realize the fielding percentage is insane in MLB but they make mistakes from time to time and you always see the hitters dragging arse running through first. We teach our kids to run through full speed and then break down, so why won’t major leaguers do it and set a good example?
Just human nature not to run hard when the infielder is about to throw you out. With the White Sox runner, he was in a competitive close play and was just not trying. He needs to sit.

Ichiro’s teammates must have been big mad then

add playing with their dogs, riding horses, and playing hockey to the list

Because if you run full speed and they make a good throw your out. If you half arse it and they make a bad throw you’re safe. Outcome is known either way. You’re essentially just watching to see the throw is on line or not.

When you hustle you increase the chance of a bad throw.

We’ll that’s what modern offensive baseball is, beer league softball.
