Why don't basketball coaches recruit football players?

I'm sure you coaches can find some pretty talented basketball players from your school's football team. It won't cost a scholarship either since football has that taken care of. The hard thing would be on the athlete balancing the two sports.
Thoughts?

some do..but most football coaches don't allow it. Robert Royal comes to mind for LSU example

Didnt Matt Jones play basketball for Arkansas?

Matt Jones did it at Ark his senior year and made the starting lineup in BB and was a good rebounder.
The constrast was weird. Jones looked like an average sized FB player in terms of muscle mass. But he looked huge compared to BB players who were much leaner.
Same with Drew Brees. He looks skinny for a FB player. But when he played a celebrity golf tournament on TV he looked much more muscular than Tiger Woods.

Big Baby would have made a great tight end if he wasnt such a pussy

Most coaches don't allow it because the seasons are too close. Basketball practice starts in October football regular season doesn't end until late November. Basketball season doesn't end until mid-march which is like a week or two into spring practice and if they go to a tournament...

marcus spears and mike clayton were on the basketball roster at one point. I think Spears saw some minutes in a few games, but eventually gave it up

Better question is why don't football coaches get basketball players to come play football. I would have loved to see Shaq in an LSU uni playing tight end on a goal line package. UNSTOPPABLE.

Greg Paulus...
Wait. Other way around.

That's why I think it should only be done if you know the FB player is gonna be a major contributor in BB since he's gonna have to step into BB late.
Jones was a major contributor. He was the starting power forward as soon as the FB bowl season ended. He stayed with the BB team until their season ended making him a little late for Spring FB. Since he was a 4th year returning QB he didn't need the Spring FB practice that much.
I also know that Pittsburgh made a big recruiting play for Terrell Pryor. They promised he could play FB and BB. Ohio State restricted him to FB. Pitt has an outstanding BB team. Not sure if Pryor would start.

Eh. The skilled players are getting shorter, generally speaking (especially RBs). I guess you could find a TE, WR, or DE who could fit the bill. Maybe even a DB.
QB is way too demanding for anyone to try a second sport. You need spring practice.

Jones played a little his freshman and sr. year.
Also, marcus monk played some too. I swear he was at arkansas for 14 years.

I want to know why some of the elite college basketball players just not built for the NBA don't play college football.
Tasmin Mitchell was an All-SEC basketball player at LSU. His body type limits his ability to really make it in the NBA.
He was definitely skilled and physically gifted enough to be an elite WR in college. I just don't get it.

Julius Peppers played basketball for UNC. I think their QB at the time was also on the basketball team.

I think a lot of WR's and DB's could.

Lots of o-line coaches like to see basketball experience from the big guys. They learn lots of footwork that comes in handy for blocking.

Glen Davis definitely made the right decision in going with BB. He's made more money with the Celtics than he ever would have in the NFL.

Everyone who plays football has his scholarship counted against the football total. i guess this is to keep schools who don't care about hoops to have extra football players stashed on the basketball team.
