Even something like volleyball.

You mean a sport where being tall, jumping high and having significant upper body strength is advantageous?

Surprise surprise

Title IX

Men's volleyball and men's soccer can never really catch on in the South because colleges can't offer the sports.

Have some in-laws in Puerto Rico, and it is pretty big there. I would say it's #2 sport (far) behind baseball.

Men’s volleyball is awesome, especially indoors. Dudes hit the ball so hard...has got to hurt to block those spikes.

I’ve played indoor/beach vb for a very long time.

They have an adult national championship tournament where a number of olympians and collegiate players compete. Each wear a jump tracking device. Watched a 6’9” dude register a 40” vertical while crushing a ball.

Nola used to have a good indoor vb scene but beach has now gone year-round which killed indoor in this area

The Olympics volleyball is great.

Is it? I think of watching the Olympics as similar to watching a sci-fi movie. It requires the suspension of disbelief and can be enjoyed for a small amount of time.

So, things like men's volleyball, water polo, Curling, etc. it can be entertaining enough to watch...but once the Olympics is over it couldn't keep my attention.

And wrestling and lacrosse amongst others.

Sucks because both are very popular HS sports.

Mens indoor is dumb. Its a bunch of 6'5+ dudes and it seems like half the points are due to blocks out of bounds. It makes it very unfun to watch.

I actually really agree with you even though I've been around the sport for decades.

It's fun to watch in person from the pure athletic prowess of the game, but difficult to enjoy on TV.

Title IX + football

You have to have the same-ish number of athletes of each sex, and football teams have 100 players, so there are more women’s sports than men’s.

its about scholarships
Football eats up 85, Basketball 15.

So they make women's sports to help.

It also factors in Headcount and Equivalency sports.

So other men's sports don't actually get "full ride" scholarships like Football and basketball get.

It is such a different game, the athleticism in the men's game is in a different stratosphere as compared to the women.

Sort of like comparing men's tennis to women's tennis. Two different games.

ESPN got some contracts to show NCAA basketball.

Seriously

I remember the early 80's, and the joy of cable television. Astros and Braves MLB (and later the Cubs);

and on ESPN you'd see things like NCAA Lacrosse (North Carolina vs Johns Hopkins, Syracuse vs Duke etc). That shite was cool.
And of course, volleyball. Not chicks, no... you'd get guys like Karch Kiraly out there just rocking it. They were getting the carryover from the 1984 Olympics in LA, and he was one of the golden boys from that event. Good looking American dude who was the Alpha in his sport.

ESPN had Sportscenter, which was more coverage than we'd ever had on TV, but they didn't have "marquee" sports yet. So they'd show stuff like that, kickboxing, etc, and it was pretty damn cool.

And then suddenly, they got Big East basketball, made that conference premium, and made every minor sport fade away.

ESPN still has lacrosse, Anish Shrof, Quint Kessenich, and Paul Carcaterra are at their best calling big games.
