Zephyrs drew well in the 90s when they moved to their stadium on Airline. And in the late 90s/early 00s they had some really good talent from the Astros. The attendance trickled away and except for a short blip after Katrina it never got back to 90s levels. By the last few years the stadium was empty for games.

Because they were attached to some of the worst MLB organizations after the Astros abandoned them.

Zephyrs worked well within Astros system because there was some crossover appeal with local MLB fans being fans of the Astros (closest MLB team), Braves (TBS), or Cubs (WGN). Local Astros fans got to follow their favorite players from Zephyrs to Astros and vice versa whenever Astros would have to send players for rehab assignments.

After the Astros, we got a year with the Nationals, a year with the Mets, and then 10 years with maybe the worst organization in the MLB in the Marlins.

Superdome really isn't configurable for baseball.

The Dome used to host MLB exhibition games virtually every year back in the 80s. I remember sitting in LF behind Rickey Henderson for an A’s-Dodgers matchup one year.

The post-Katrina rennovations fixed some of the lower level in place and made it impossible to switch modes to fit baseball and soccer fields.

LSU doesn’t have close to 11k actual attendance per game at the Box

Some people have a hard time understanding tickets sold vs actual attendance. Actual attendance (tickets scanned) is not reported.

You can fit a soccer field because the USWNT has played there… and you can fit a banana ball field

The women's game was an exhibition on a non-regulation sized field. A full-sized field will not fit anymore.

Don't worry about more teams, try to hang on to the 2 you have. I wonder if the NFL would push The Saints to move if it wasn't the best spot for a Super Bowl.

Smallest media market with 3 teams (excluding MLS) is Pittsburgh at #27. NOLA is #50. Never getting a 3rd team.

Big difference from AAA and MLB from a casual fan perspective

Louisiana is lucky to still have the Saints, and if we’re being honest there’s a good chance the Saints wouldn’t be in New Orleans anymore if not for Hurricane Katrina. If anything, Katrina cemented the Saints into New Orleans and Louisiana for years to come. The Pelican’s could leave tomorrow and the vast majority of people in Louisiana wouldn’t care, including myself.

New Orleans as a city isn’t the same now as it was when the Saints kicked off.

That definitely hurt the zephyrs to lose their Astros affiliation. People followed the Astros players and the talent was good.

The A’s were the last baseball team to use a stadium built for 2 sports, and when they left, the Raiders were already gone. No way in hell MLB goes to the 50th sized market AND shares a stadium.

Portland and Nashville and SLC have already thrown out renderings of possible parks. I do think the new football stadium in Nashville kills that city’s chance at baseball, but again…the list would effectively end before New Orleans is included.

At that point, they’d just go to Jacksonville or Norfolk or frickin Greenville

If MLB was serious about attendance, they would move either the Rays or Marlins to Brooklyn. NYC can support 3 baseball teams easily

When the Zs were good, the stands were packed. When they were the Astros AAA affiliate in the 90s there were always a ton of people there. People don’t realize how bad the Mets and Marlins farm system was. It was bad and boring baseball.

You can have the Rays. They are in the process of sticking Hillsborough County and Tampa City residents with a $650M bill for a new stadium that a majority of people don't want to fund through raised taxes.

I think a minor league team in the St. George / Ascension / Livingston area would do well. No one wants to drive out to Goldsby at night. I'd love to see how an AA team would do.
