Why are there any rules for college sports for who is qualified to play?

It seems the courts will shoot down any type of eligibility rules. So why are there any eligibility rules at all?

If you’re talking about these current lawsuits, I would recommend looking into the actual mechanics of them to understand why the leagues/ncaa are getting their arse kicked in courts
This isn’t a “courts always side with the players” situation. NCAA created this mess by doing the 5/5 ruling late, then arbitrarily trying to enforce it differently for players that would still have had eligibility under those rules

Colleges don’t want to classify these players as employees. That’s what it comes down to.
Once they are officially recognized as employees by the court system, they will function like every other paid league in the US where there aren’t any age/experience limits.
All it will take is a dude that’s been cut by the NFL or NBA to sue in court and they will win.
I don’t know why this is so hard.

Is having to actually pass classes still a requirement in this age for college athletics? Or has such a requirement been ruled "unfair" as well?

I’m not sure about any rulings on that, but I can’t remember the last time a player was ruled “academically ineligible”.
Hell, Gameday did a feature on Diego Pavia last year…a “day in the life “ type deal. This is at Vanderbilt, an esteemed academic institution. Not one second of that piece was classroom related. I’ll venture to bet he never took a class while there. He already had a degree from his previous school.

Just wait until unions get involved. It is going to blow it all up. This is all because the universities and administrations got super greedy.

This was the inevitable outcome once players started getting openly paid. Limiting employment opportunities is illegal.

Technically, yes. But a large part of that for athletes is online courses; I suspect a lot of those are tailored to athletes.

And how they are actually graded if at all. Might be a penciled in B at the beginning of the semester regardless of actual attendance or test scores.

Its inevitable that Congress will have to give the NCAA and anti trust exemption and we will have players unions and collective bargaining. Its not “if”, its “when”

Me neither, NCAA should be able to enforce its rules, conferences too. Our power hungry loser state judges and ambulance chasers ruined the sport.

NCAA should put a rule out that any team that takes a former pro player, forfeits the right to play in any post season tournament.
