Dan Gilbert should have had the Cavs taken away from him for ruining Lebron twice.

Sterling eventually sold
Sure not by choice but his comments were the best move he’s made

I don’t see Dolan ever selling. Dolan will never have an accomplishment close to that

NBA: Donald Sterling ran an incompetent organization in LA for two decades. The Clippers are the gold standard of sports futility thanks to his misrule.

NFL: Bob Irsay ran one of the NFL's glamor franchises (the Baltimore Colts) into the ground in less than a decade and then fled in the middle of the night, outrunning the law. He is such a terrible person that the famed SI profile of him got negative quotes about him from his brother and his own mother.

MLB: Tom Yawkey is now remembered for being a racist, which is a shame, because he should be remembered for being a God awful owner and terrible human being, too. Yawkey spent money, which is good, but he spent it wildly and without a plan. His stubborn refusal to integrate his teams probably cost his team the World Series. While everyone else loaded up pn former Negro League stars, he trotted out an old, slow team that couldn't get over the hump. Oh, and he protected and employed a clubhouse trainer credibly charged with sexual abuse for two decades. Piss on Tom Yawkey.

NHL: John Spano faked having the assets to buy the Islanders. He fooled the NHL because of course he did, but eventually the ruse unravelled and he was sent to prison for wire fraud. Shockingly, he is not the only NHL owner in the past 30 years to be arrested for fraud. This is a recurring problem for the NHL, but Spano was the worst example.

Bud Adams
Orioles owner

Jerry Jones is a dipshit, but not a bad owner. Cowboys wont win anything until hes gone.

Donald Sterling of course

Bruce Norris. His influence in the NHL is one of the reasons it's a distant fourth. He was lucky he inherited such good player like Gordie Howe when they were young.

Charles O. Finley. Terrible owner. He was actually forced to sell by MLB. He won of course, but despite of him. He had good scouts and good baseball people running the team until they couldn't take him anymore.

Wellington Mara. He gets praise because he was one of the originally owners of the NFL, but he ran the franchise horribly for decades after his best players retired.

Marge Schott
Sterling
Eugene Melnyk (Ottawa Senators)

True. You didn't even list Ted Stepien, who was so bad the NBA enacted rules to keep him from ruining the Cavs.

Stepien green lit a halftime show where a guy crushed beer cans on his forehead and blew up firecrackers in his mouth.

Beyond that, Sterling, Dolan and either Sarver or Shinn are good choices.

I came here to post John Spano. It still boggles my mind that he was able to buy the team.

Finley is another great answer. I thought about him, but he at least gets points for restoring the A's into a great franchise, even if it wasn't really him that did it.

Eugene Melnyk is so bad, and probably the worst current owner. He's gutted the team, failed to acquire a new arena, and virtually killed pro hockey in Ottawa. This article pretty much sums him up: LINK

NHL owners are so bad that James Dolan rates as a DECENT NHL owner. Think about that. One of the most hated and derided NBA owners is about middle of the pack in the NHL. The NHL is simply miles ahead of everyone when it comes to crappy ownership groups.
