The MLB draft has been around since 1965. Three players in who have gone 1.1 have been elected to the Hall of Fame. (NFL has 10 since 1968, NBA is even more)
Unlike the NBA and NFL where a good number of guys who are picked 1.1 are instant starters and sometimes even stars, most MLB top picks are at least 2-3 years away.
Because of the nature of the spot and the gap between hs/college and the pros, the MLB draft is far more based on potential and projection than it is on past performance.
It’s not as simple as saying that a guy was “the most accomplished college pitcher” = “the best pro prospect”.
The MLB draft, unlike the NBA and NFL, will also have a significant number of guys who can using returning to or going to college as an option. That makes sign-ability and issue and strategy.

They are but the draft isn’t relevant to that. If they take Langford for instance it’s so they can use that bonus money somewhere else. They are part of the reason why MLB changed the bonus rules because they were pretty aggressive about spending over it

Do you think Dylan Crews gets paid more for not going #1?
It seems like a really, really good agent shouldn’t have a hard time getting the best player in the draft compensated what he’s worth

Is there no value to trading down or completely out of the first draft if you don’t want to spend the money on a top three pick?

It’s also different from the NFL in that everyone except college seniors are eligible to go back or go to college. The NFL contracts are pretty much set with each pick and teams usually don’t deviate much. MLB a player can get over his slot if the team wants to pay a premium on keeping te player out of college.
It’s happened too many times to count with LSU signees. Zach Lee was on campus registered for classes and in the bottom of the 9th signed with tge Dodgers for 5.25 million. He was the 28th pick in 2010. He got paid well over slot. Bryce Harper was the #1 pick that year and signed for 6.25 million.

I saw a mock draft a week or two back that had Crews and Skenes going 1 and 2 respectively. Seems Langford has jumped in there with one of those 3 going 1st.
Of course, there could be some HS kid out there that I don't know of since I don't keep up with it on a national level, but the mocks have been more college-heavy compared to years past.

I’ll admit I don’t fully understand how the assigned values work for the MLB draft, but I assume you think Pittsburgh would offer Crews less than $9M?
His really, really good agent is gonna prevent him from going #1 for what, an extra $500k?

The slot values are nothing more than suggestions. A team picking later could offer him more money.

Well, what’s this narrative about Pittsburgh not wanting to pay Crews?
They drafted Termarr Johnson at #4 last year & he signed for $7,219,000 (the assigned value for #4 was $7,005,800).
