I once saw greg maddux throw a 75 pitch complete game and for that he'll forever be the GOAT in my eyes

Sorry, 76 pitches. He didn't have a 3 ball count that entire game. He only threw 13 balls. It was like watching a master painter.

It doesn’t work like that anymore because there are very few pitchers in the league that can do it.

Dude.

Not one of them have the control Maddux did.

You’re in here acting like umpires went in games and just decided to widen the strike zone just for him. Also, if it was as easy to widen the zone like Maddux did every pitcher would do it.

Yet, it doesn’t happen often.

Maddox would start a game on the black and by inning 3 had methodically moved the strike zone 3+ inches off the plate. He didn’t magically get those calls from umpires. It was a process and that process would succeed for as long as a human being is calling balls and strikes. Not to mention he could move his fastball both ways with control. Most everything he threw started in the strike zone.
I was just drunk and talking shite and being an arse earlier in the thread.

If I could show kids only 1 pitcher in an attempt to teach them how to pitch, it would be Greg Maddox. Every superlative y'all are using to describe him is accurate.

I do not think he'd be as good today. I just don't think what he did would be as effective. I'm almost sure if it.

So he could pitch around barrels during the steroid era but you don’t think he could do it in the current era when everyone is looking to drive the ball out of the park?

These guys today would see a pitch and think they’re about to hit it 25 rows deep only to weakly dribble it to the SS/2B more often than not.

Pedro

Johnson

Maddox. Maddox would be just a guy if you made him throw strikes. The strikes 4" off the plate made him.

Maddux is living proof that hitters could hit a bullet if they could just get the timing down. Maddux shows that it's not velocity that matters, but movement and location. That skill set translates through every era. Even Johnson didn't become an effective pitcher until he developed a slider and sinker and more importantly, started to throw strikes. Hitters couldn't just sit on the fastball once he developed, as even minor leaguers could take him yard when he was just a hard thrower. The inability to hit a location delayed a Hall of Fame career by a half decade.

You’re generally right but Maddux and Glavine’s postseason performances were not the reasons why the Braves didn’t win more World Series. It was their bullpen that always shite the bed. Blew two late inning leads against the Blue Jays in the ‘92 WS, lost two extra inning games to the Phillies in ‘93, blowing the 6-0 lead against the NYY in ‘96, and blowing late leads against the Yankees in ‘99. Essentially, the reason why the ‘90s Yankees were a dynasty and the ‘90s Braves were not is that the Yankees had Mariano Rivera and the Braves didn’t. Simple as that.

Dont forget the offense, or lack there of

Staff was built to succeed in regular season. Glavine, Maddox and even Avery pitched to contact, which is great against average (relatively speaking) hitters, but when you pitch to contact against great hitters like in the playoffs and World Series it doesn’t work. Power pitchers were better suited for postseason.

Maddux, Glavine, & Smoltz , in 21 World Series starts, only had a combined record of 8-8 even though they had a combined ERA of 2.26.

They had the following stats in the World Series:

.................W-L...GS....IP.....ERA...WHIP
Maddux......2-3....5....38.2....2.09...0.905
Glavine.......4-3....8....58.1....2.16...0.909
Smoltz........2-2....8....51.0....2.47...1.275

It wasnt the pitching of their big 3 that cost them rings

Do I get the umpires that Maddux used to? That foot off the plate fastball was a hell of a strike out pitch.

When it comes to career no one can touch Maddux and Clemens.

Pedro has the best prime though.

Schilling is the most clutch

And if the catcher set up a foot off the plate and Maddux fired a strike to his catcher...he got the call.

Umps were just fricking dumb in the 90's. They all had to be special and have their own strike zone. <== Disgusting. egos on parade.

Never saw anyone get so many strike calls on pitches where the bat couldn't reach.

This x1000.

If computer called pitches using the actual rules, Maddox would have been playing in Japan.

Yeah a guy like Maddox would never ever adjust to the ump.

I swear this board gets dumber by the day.

I mean they went to 5 world series in the 90s. It's not like they didn't have postseason success.

This was what I came in here to say. 5 WS. Won 1 and lost 2 of those series 4-3. The idea that they got into the playoffs and just got worked by better teams is absurd.

ETA: At least they got that one, otherwise we'd be talking about them like they were baseball's Buffalo Bills.

But their pitching was clearly made for regular season.

That's such a fake baseball expert take.

Yes. And if you can control all pitches like he did you can get those calls
