Does anyone know why he didn’t even consider Ole Miss or Mississippi State? Southern Mississippi was in his final three but by time Bobby Collins had taken the SMU job and he was the reason for the emergence of Southern Miss.

How’s that?
Switzer switched from the wishbone to the I to accommodate Dupree’s physical skills as a freshman in 1982. Dupree gained a bunch of weight as the season progressed, especially in the period before the bowl game. That carried over into 1983, and he left the program around midseason without saying a word after a concussion against Texas.
Every coach has regrets when things don’t work out with a special talent, but Marcus Dupree’s biggest problem was Marcus Dupree.

I remember Walton and Johnson faking an interview with him when the Breakers were moving to Portland with him saying I don't want to go to Portland.. There ain't no Domino's in Portland. I don't know why, but this stuck in my head from all those years ago.

I’ve seen the documentary several times and read Switzer’s book. Switzer regrets not being able to reach Dupree, but every coach has those regrets with players who didn’t live up to their potential.
Switzer won the national championship with Dupree’s freshman class. Ultimately, it’s up to the player.

I remember that freshman season. For my money, he was the best RB I ever saw.

You know any players that played for Bryant, Switzer or any other great Coach from that era?
They all got treated like shite…. The worst mistake you can make with a great talent is coddling them.
