His play as a freshman at OU in 1982 was remarkable. Unfortunately, he was lazy and had some bad characters n his circle.
Barry Switzer devoted an entire chapter to him in his autobiography, Bootlegger’s Boy. It’s an excellent book.

When he was drafted by the NO Breakers, he bought the house 4 doors down from us.
One of his 1st purchases was a custom painted aqua blue Mercedes with custom curtains for each window.
Very shy, down to earth guy. For a young guy, there was never any crazy insane parties or anything like that. He was just a quiet kid from the country (Philadelphia, MS).
He was a hell of a talent.

There's an entire book about it called The Courtship of Marcus Dupree.
I think the book is what inspired the 30 for 30. Big, superhuman running backs were all the rage back then - guys like Earl Campbell, George Rogers, Hershel Walker, Eric Dickerson, Bo Jackson, etc... The thought was landing one of these unicorns would make or break your program.

Watching the 30 for 30 on him, he seemed like an insecure kid who was a freak athlete. He had a lot of people using him it seemed like. Then, with the injuries, it just kind of went downhill.

Yep, and Dupree was as big and talented as any of them. My dad was in high school during that era, and he’s like some kind of mythical creature to that whole generation. Truly is one of the biggest what if’s in the history of football.

Yep everyone basically left him as soon as he got hurt. So many people used him for his money, was pretty sad. I want to say he has his own trucking company in Mississippi now. Seems to be at peace and enjoying life.
