If The pitching staff holds,

They are a legit threat.

They will compete. They can hit and pitch. Bullpen is a little iffy. The AL East is as wide open as any division in baseball

I hate the mets but they are intriguing choice. Early camp news says their big 4 are looking sharp. They are built for the postseason

I know they've talked about it but I wonder they'll ever have a grass field at the Rogers Centre.

the retractable roof isn't really a big deal cause they don't seem to open it much.

just always been fascinated with the stadium for some odd reason.

Giants. Oh wait, is this an even or odd numbered year? Ok, so in that case, I'll go Cubs or Astros.

I don't see what everyone else sees in the Astros. Here's a list of the ERA+ of their five starters last year:

91
85
88
87
123

That's... bad. Hell, the Orioles have a better rotation than that. And they at least have the best bullpen in baseball to cover for its flaws.

The Astros have been great at run prevention due to their defense, but that's a tough way to repeat things if your starting rotation is barely helping.

Dallas Keuchel is one of those 80s era+ I don't think he gets back to Cy young level but I don't think he pitches as bad as last year either. Our best starter last year was lance McCullers who was out a large part of the season. Any projection of the Astros getting deep into the playoffs is assuming that he's healthy. Lastly I still think we make a deal for Quintana gray or archer (hopefully Quintana). Quintana LMJ Keuchel Mchugh musgrove is a pretty solid rotation IMO with the ability to spot start fiers or Morton (we deal fiers imo) to limit lance and musgroves innings. we have/will have one of the best bullpens in the league

The lineup got a significant upgrades in the offseason and got rid of some major liabilities in Castro and Gomez

The Astros should mash. They are projected to score the most runs in baseball.

I think McCullers staying healthy is key for their rotation. His strikeout/groundball combo is absurd (although his walk rate is too, and not in a good way). Obviously, Dallas Keuchel being closer to 2015 Keuchel instead of 2016 Keuchel would be huge as well.

The Astros bullpen was actually first in FIP and WAR last year as well. Not saying that means they have the best bullpen in baseball, but it is a good, deep pen.

The mets have the type of rotation that can beat the Cubs in the NL.....

And McHugh being closer to 2014 or 2015 version instead of 2016. Advanced stats tell you he should be more like the 2015 version... BABIP against him in 2016 was .340, .042 above league average. His strikeout rate was actually better in 2016 than 2015, and his FIP indicated bad luck as well.

They scored 724 runs last year. League average? 725. I think they'll improve on that with a full season of Bregman and the fact they are a young team with some guys who should improve. But FanGraphs is expecting them to jump from 4.47 R/G to 4.96. That would make their offense, essentially, the Cubs (4.98 last year). I don't see that kind of jump.

Yes, they desperately need Keuchel to turn around last year. I'm not as big on McCullers. 5.0 BB/9 is not sustainable for a major league pitcher. FanGraphs think he and McHugh are suddenly going to become top of the rotation guys. That seems optimisitc.

I think the Astros are a good club, but I think they have more flaws than they want to admit. They look a lot closer to a 80-85 win team to me than a 90-95 win team. And that's if Keuchel finds his groove again.

I consider myself a diehard Stros fan and agree with your post

Trading for a top arm during the summer and winning the division is the realistic goal for me. Once you make the playoffs, anybody can get hot and anything can happen...

Sure. But that means to me they are not the favorite, which is the real point I'm disputing. I wouldn't be shocked if they won the West (mainly because there are 4 teams who could viably win that division, depending on how you feel about the Angels).

The AL favorite, for me, is still Cleveland.

They added Reddick, Beltran and McCann. Plus full seasons of Bregman and Gurriel. Not necessarily star hitters, but there are no easy outs in that lineup now. Which they had plenty of last year between Gomez, Rasmus, Castro and their first base situation. Plus Marisnick and Gonzalez should get less PAs now. I don't know if I would pick them to lead the league in runs, but I like that lineup 1-9.
