I was always on Team Big Unit, but even I have to give the edge to Pedro at his absolute peak.

Peak Pedro is very likely the best pitcher to ever exist.

Peak Pedro is a distant second to Peak JR Richards.

Pedro, Maddux, Clemens, Johnson. Hard to pick one, but Pedro had the highest peak.

Also, I loved watching young Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. Kerry's fifth start is undoubtedly the best single-game by any athlete I have ever seen.

Jose Fernandez was so special to watch. He was my favorite to watch over the past few years even though Kershaw is the best active pitcher.

Greg Maddux for me, his placement was an art form.

he was unbelievable but he also got more calls off the plate than anyone in history. Made him much harder to hit. One reason his era was so much higher in the postseason, the zone shrunk

Nolan Ryan is the all time leader in hits per 9 innings pitched with 6.55. I think that is the best indicator of "stuff".

For reference, Pedro 7.07, Randy Johnson 7.28

Kershaw and Koufax are 2nd and 3rd all time with 6.62 and 6.79 respectively.

Kerry Wood. 20 K's in a game.

This is why Greg Maddux is the best:

quote:

First, Maddux was convinced no hitter could tell the speed of a pitch with any meaningful accuracy. To demonstrate, he pointed at a road a quarter-mile away and said it was impossible to tell if a car was going 55, 65 or 75 mph unless there was another car nearby to offer a point of reference.

“You just can’t do it,” he said. Sometimes hitters can pick up differences in spin. They can identify pitches if there are different releases points or if a curveball starts with an upward hump as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. But if a pitcher can change speeds, every hitter is helpless, limited by human vision.

“Except,” Maddux said, “for that [expletive] Tony Gwynn.”

Question: what expletive did he use for Tony? I've always assumed "fricker."

He's also the spiritual father of the "Maddux"

quote:

Requirements for a Maddux: The pitcher must toss a complete game shutout, and throw no more than 99 total pitches.

He threw 13 of them.
