Tebow will probably be the last truly great college "career"

Between leaving early for the NFL and rampant transfers, a guy playing 4 years at the same school at an elite level will not really happen ever again. Before the 90s it was actually quite common.

For a career Tebow is up there

for a season, it's Cam Newton

non QB it's Suh, Sanders (Barry), Mathieu

Grant Wistrom, DE, Nebraska

Team went 49-2 with 3 National Championships during his time with the team.

He was a 3x All-conference and 3x All-American (2x 1st team). 2x conference Defensive POTY and a Lombardi Award winner.

It's a pretty loaded resume. The Cornhuskrrs dominated mainly because of defense and he was the star of that unit.

He was so great he couldn't beat out Thurman Thomas the previous years and had one statistcally great single season, but Burrow and Newton led their teams to national championships...Sanders not even close. Give me Burrow over Sanders! Burrows numbers were just as impressive but he.won it all.

Already many great answers in this thread. Always felt it was pretty neat how Charles Woodson put corner play on the map for college football A position that makes it hard to be greatest at, he was something else in college.

I can't believe this has made it to the second page without a mention of Jim Brown. Even without a Heisman, he is arguably the most dominant college football player ever and has even fewer peers in the argument for greatest college athlete ever.

My top ten would be very RB-heavy, with Brown, Jackson, Walker, Jim Thorpe (also a multi-sport star), Red Grange, Earl Campbell, Sanders, Archie Griffin, and Sayers. The only non-RB in my top ten would be Butkis. Staubach is close to top 10 and Manning might make my top 20.

I think Cannon is the best LSU player ever, but I need a little more time to ruminate on Burrow, it is likely he will eclipse Cannon in my mind over time and jump ahead of all quarterbacks save Staubach.

Slingin' Sammy Baugh.

Objectively, this may be the correct answer.

Unfortunately, it isn't easy to find many statistics from that time.

I know Baugh, in the pros, led the league in punting, completion percentage, and interceptions in the same season once (1943) and at least two of those many other times. It's not a stretch to assume he was one of the top players in all those while in college.

Not as surprising as no mention of Herschel Walker.

Sanders had probably the best individual season of any rb in college ever but he’s nowhere near the best college career.

Tebow is the answer for best offensive college player of all-time. For defense you’re down to Hugh Green, Derrick Thomas, Luke Kuechly, Charles Woodson, or Ed Reed.

Personally, I’ll take one of the first 3.

This is where the heisman lost all credibility. That was a joke.

Herschel

Should have been two time Heisman winner

Never lost an SEC game

3 time SEC Champion

One National Championship

He was their whole team for three straight seasons and nobody could stop him

Y’all are leaving Michael Vick off that list. He drug Virginia Tech to the National Championship game. Newton was better, but Vick was amazing his last year at VT.

Tebow probably best and most decorated college career.

VT wasn’t a one man show.

I was a walk-on at Bama in 1998. I dressed for the Music City Bowl against VT that year and they beat the shite out of us. They were on the brink of being a contender before Vick played a snap.
