How are LSU fans not nominating Steve Van Buren?
The correct answer is John Riggins then Larry Csonka. Van Buren dosen't have the numbers and he played in the 40's nobodys alive to remember that shite.

John Riggins was the embodiment of the myth of the Black Irish.

LSU's own Jim Taylor.

The question was in NFL history not just what people under 30 know about.
You also can not compare just total numbers from guys that played 10-12 game seasons vs 14-16-17. Van Buren avg 70.6 ypg 41st all time, just behind Jerome Bettis, and ahead of Franco Harris and Marshwn Lynch. Larry Csonka avg 55.3 ypg 127 all time, behind Leonard Fournette
Jim Taylor avg 64.6 is 71 all time, Riggins 64.9 for 69th

It's not a long list. The overwhelming majority of great NFL RBs have been black. After the top 4, in no particular order:
Jim Taylor
Larry Csonka
John Riggins
Christian McAffrey
Paul Hornung
Rocky Bleier
Ed Podalak
Hugh McElhenny
Donny Anderson
Mike Alstott
Red Grange
Bronko Nagurski
Daryl Johnston
John Capeletti
Craig James
Tom Matte
Tom Rathman
Mark Van Eeghen

Probably a good comparison to CMC in style, usage and talent.

This thread starting making me think, is LSU White RBU? Van Buren, Jim Taylor, Billy Cannon, Sammy Martin, and Jacob Hester is a pretty damn good line up.
Also crazy to think about is that in 1957 LSU had the future NFL and AFL MVPs in the same backfield with Taylor and Cannon.
ETA: And Stovall as Nostradamus pointed out

And OP, please don’t get it twisted. Those of us, including myself who listed Gil Fenerty don’t really think he’s in the conversation. It’s just a nostalgia play for both southern Louisiana and those of us who played Techmo Bowl.

I think somewhere there is a video of Csonka punching out a defensive player during a run. Man was a brutal runner.

Csonka, Gifford, Riggins

Mainly because of Tecmo Super Bow
Same here. He was a machine on KR/PR.

These three were incredibly tough to tackle. Solid through and through.
I used to hate it when a team I was pulling for had to go against Riggins. He just rolled up first down after first down. Demoralizing.
I was a chiefs fan back then and was glad to see mercury morris or Jim kiick running the ball and not Larry Csonka.
Jim Taylor was in that same mold.
I really liked Ed Podolak but he was no way in their class.

Ed Podolak.
I was waiting to see him mentioned. Really underrated guy.
Tom Rathman as well. Kind of one of the real unsung cogs of that 49ers Dynasty.
