I don't know why, but I see his next stop being at Tulane or Memphis before he gets a power job.
I 100% agree. That's why I put him in the "Low-tier school stepstone candidates" tier.

this is the direction programs should go
find low tier coaches that can bring a boat load of transfers with them. You have instant stability with players familiar with the game plans
If the coaches suck, you aren't stuck with a 10 year buyout because the AD is starfricker and pulled an established coach from another big program

That + ability to run one side of the ball and adapt.
Recruiting is just less important now. CFB is going to need more NFL-style coaches. The recruiter-CEO model is dead.

Sumrall is not ready for a power job.

When I saw this thread I thought of this beaut after Bama lost to FSU but couldn’t find it because it was moved to the SEC Rant and apparently anchored
Some classic comments from the all star tards like TS. Of course they will ignore it and pretend SFP wasn’t right about the Deboer hire

NIL started in 2020. 4 of the 5 NCs that have been won in that time have been via Recruiter/CEOs. Hell maybe 5 depending on what you think of Harbaugh, but he’s gone. 3 active coaches have won NCs and all 3 are that archetype.
A recruiter/ceo may not work at the G5 level or low level P4, but for the top programs, that’s absolutely who you want.

Saban and Kirby were/are active on one side of the ball that’s not what is meant by the CEO/recruiter type that sits back and hires top assistants and let them coach , both are obviously great recruiters, but that doesn’t make them the CEO type (think Bobby Bowden, Mack Brown, Ed O was hired for that model) I think Day was active on offense and not that model either but maybe mistaken on that.

He was, like Harbaugh.

I'm curious to see if there are any "lateral move" guys,
Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley are two that recently left one big program for another. It doesn't happen as often but it's not unheard of.
Franchione and Fisher respectively left Alabama and Florida State for Texas A&M as two previous examples. Kiffin left Tennessee.
There are already some big time job openings and that list is going to grow, and it could be the kind of openings that attract sitting coaches at big time institutions.

Is Tim Beck (Vandy OC) too old to get a look as a head coach?
He is 61. Has prior head coaching experience at Pitt State.

Would Brohm leave Louisville? His record against ranked teams is pretty impressive.
I would be genuinely shocked if he left them for another college job. Born and raised in Louisville, played for Louisville, etc.

When you lay out all those examples at once, whew, it's bleak.

Its the New Mexico St guys that have led to Lea's success. Vandy was Vandy for 3 years under Lea before they came.
Jerry Kill, Tim Beck and Pavia.
The Hallman rule: Never hire a coach who's only success has come with an elite QB. Wait until he repeats it.

That a good rule. Id also say win without the previous coaches players. Although that's not really the case anymore these days.

Amazing how the "low tier" has all of these players that can start at that the upper tier.
