Messi is higher on the list of guys who play a sport than he is on the list of athletes.

I can hear trump up In the booth whispering to his wife and fifa president “look at #10 there Messi. That’s Messi. He is the greatest to do it and he walks. He walks 95% of the game. Can you believe that look he walks”

Dude was calling the manager because some guy put his hand by his mouth for half a second. Not GOAT material.
Posted on 7/19/26 at 7:21 pm to JamalMurry27
Unranked. Didn’t even play football or baseball at the youth level.

Why can’t we just separate all of these by each sport? There’s no such thing as an overall tGOAT as they rarely even cross different sports. Even when they do cross different sports, they’re great in one and ok to decent in another.

Bolt is the greatest sprinter of all time but it feels silly to include him this conversation by saying “he’s the greatest at running 100m and sometimes 200” Like if we are including that there’s tons of more dominant athletes at random hyper niche events somewhere
Except the 100m dash isn’t a hyper niche event or sport. It is quite literally the most universal sport on the planet. All 6 billion or whatever among us have tried to run fast and Bolt ran faster than everyone.

This tells me your age without you telling me your age. 99 percent of people that have actually seen them both play know that it’s not even close. I can’t stand Stephen a smith but he hits the nail on the head here with his argument for Jordan being head and shoulders above LeBron:

Thank god soccer is over. I’m stuffed like at thanksgiving except for 4 years I can’t imagine watching a whole premier league season

Running is the most universal sport on the planet. Running for 100m is, by definition, a very niche version of that.
Bolt is the fastest man on earth…somewhere between 80 and 250 meters
All that being said, Aleksandr Karelin deserves a mention

Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic deserve to be in this conversation.
But listing three from the same sport that played at the same time kinda defeats the purpose of arguing them as the GOAT, since none of the three clearly distanced themselves from the other two.

Your posts are word salad. Complete nonsense.

If you took away all 894 of his career goals scored, Wayne Gretzky would still be the NHL all-time points leader.

No, it isn’t.
All the distance runners are just people who couldn’t be sprinters. All the glory and money is in sprinting. We all want the speed of the Corvette - not the gas mileage of a Toyota - if we can afford it.
I agree with the general point that Bolt faced a larger talent pool than other GOAT athletes. It’s nearly impossible for a kid with sub 10 second 100 m. potential to go through life and not have that talent recognized. A 4th grade teacher watching her students play kickball at recess can recognize that Johnny is exceptionally fast and that he needs to do something with that speed.
If Bolt and everyone within five years of age of him had been born and raised to max out their sprinting potential, I think there’s a good chance Bolt still beats them all. If we did them same for Phelps in the pool, I think it’s highly questionable he would have had anywhere near the same success.
As it is, all of Phelps’ individual world records have been broken. Bolt’s haven’t even been threatened.

How many people would rather hold a world record at a distance of one mile or greater compared to the 100 meter dash?
Most people don’t play left guard instead of quarterback, or right field instead of pitcher or shortstop because they love those positions so much.
I’m not disrespecting distance guys here. I’m just saying most track athletes who can be sprinters are sprinters.

You are disproving your central premise while defending it.
People dont play left guard because they werent good enough to play QB. they do so because those positions because they are different humans with different skill sets.
Just because QB is the highest paid and highest profile position does not mean that every prospective football player starts out trying to be a QB and slowing gets wittled down into other postions. Thats just a bizarre view of the pipeline.
I can promise you every elite Miler or marathon runner, or steeple-chase person isnt a failed 100m sprinter.
The fact that the 100m is the the most "high-profile" event is completely irrelevant.

I asked ChatGPT this question and it spit out as many women as men, which is laughable to me
This discussion should be gender neutral. The only one I can see working is Simone Biles.
