I think golf is up there as well. Any individual sport has that same emotional component that impacts players during their early life.

In tennis the pressure probably peaks earlier because if you haven't turned pro by 20, you're over the hill.

I would have to say that golf is much more mentally grueling. Tennis is a reactionary sport. The volley is coming at you and you react. Tennis is more physically exhausting but not sure about the mental side.

Golf you have time to think about it. You've got the walk to your ball, you've got the setup, you're standing over the ball. Millimeters is the difference between success and shanking it into the bunker.

Yeah I mean they basically are robbed of their teenage years.

Guarantee you 99% of professional athletes did not have much of a childhood outside of whatever sport they were playing

This is what happens to women when people actually watch their sports

Please expand on this. This needs to be explored and discussed.

I mean, when I think of women's sports the two most watched women's sports are the Figure Skating and Gymnastics in the Olympics, but you only saw these mental midgets emerge lately. Mary Lou and Nadia, Oksana and Katarina never melted down like were seeing these primadonnas do.

Imagine doing a reactionary sport where millimeters mattered... in vs out, where your racket hits the ball, etc.

We’ve seen a strong uptick in these issues with female athletes. I think it’s pretty easy to connect the dots.

I’ve read where it’s not just athletes. Social media is doing an absolute number on girls during their formative years. The longer it can be held off the better.

Imagine being the number one ranked tennis player in the world and winning pretty much every tournament you enter and you have everyone telling you how great you are. Now imagine it being a year later and you can’t win for shite. Now imagine going through all this as a 22 year old girl. Bitches aren’t stable to begin with.

The media shouldn't be celebrating these players being honest about their feelings and emotions. They should be blasting their parents for putting them in that position from years of over intense training and competition.

I agree but for you get a level as high as playing at the main stadium you have to be mentally strong just to do that… taking some questions from the media should be a walk in the path.

They’re mostly full of crap. The only one who can truly claim mental health is Mardy Fish. All of these women claiming “anxiety” are mostly just attention-seeking and have normal anxiety and pressure that all athletes deal with.. they don’t have clinical anxiety.

A generation or two of coddled and spoiled children yearning to always be the victim even after they reach the pinnacle of success.

It can be for many kids. What doesnt help for some is that its such a private sport that their parents and/or coach are so involved that theyre almost part of the game mentally.

The amount of time kids that aspire to become pros in tennis spend practicing and travelling dwarfs pretty much every other major sport. They dont have a normal life and its definitely not a country club lifestyle.

Like someone else said, if you arent a pro at 20, your career is over. Ill actually extend that to about 18 years old or so. Its not like football, baseball, or basketball where you can go to college and continue your journey. If you are a senior in high school and going to college to play tennis, you arent becoming a pro.

Mental Health issues run across all sports female/male. Always have, this isn't a new thing.

You can name several in all sports, Andre Agassi, Matt Wolfe, Roy Halladay, Joey Votto, Steve Smith on and on and on.

Not everyone is a Tom Brady and are fighting for their spot everyday every play.

Reading about players getting cut in the NFL is pretty depressing. I remember T-Bob Hebert talking about it, just sat in a dark hotel room for days.

If you’re not a fricking child, you’ve learned to not make assumptions about people’s mental health. You never know what kind of load another person is carrying, especially if they live a life you have no way of comprehending.

Not an expert on the subject but from what I've read about junior tennis in the past, that shite can be brutal on kids mentally.

LSUpride can probably speak to this better than a lot on the board.

I’ve coached top 10 players in a state, that aren’t even playing anymore a year later because they’re so burned out (mainly from their parents). It’s probably the most mental sport where kids are the hardest on themselves because there is literally no one else to blame. Golf is probably second in that regard, but it’s not as physically exhausting along side the mental part.

Golf is a much hard sport to master compared to tennis… it’s the most mentally challenging sport there is. Because it’s just you against the course and the elements…….
